Job description
The Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care (NMPC) is offering an outstanding opportunity for a talented individual who wishes to advance education and research by building excellence and innovative education and/or a programme of cutting edge applied research. This postholder will support pre-registration adult nursing programmes with an emphasis on clinical decision-making, professional development, clinical knowledge, evidence-based practice, leadership and interprofessional teamwork. They will be part of the team developing innovative virtual and real time simulation and engaging education with excellent student experience.   
The Faculty ranks no 2 in the world for its research and education (QS rankings). The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF2014), rated over 90% of our research as world class or world leading, and 84% of our impact was world leading. Our applied clinical and health research transforms health, quality of life and care across nursing, midwifery, palliative and end of life care, rehabilitation and related clinical, health and social sciences. It includes the Cicely Saunders Institute for Palliative Care, Policy and Rehabilitation, the premier Institute for Palliative Care, bringing together clinical and academic teams. In addition, the Faculty has Research Divisions in Care for Long Term Conditions, Applied Technologies for Clinical Care, and Methodologies, the Nightingale-Saunders Complex Clinical Trials Unit, and Teaching Departments focussed in Adult, Mental Health and Child & Family Nursing and Midwifery. Owing to the agility of our Faculty and King’s we are able to consider applicants who are interested in either an Academic Education Pathway (predominantly teaching with scholarship) or those who wish to apply for a Research and Teaching pathway (teaching and research).  
The appointee will make a substantive contribution to the academic work of the Faculty and King’s, working with education, research and clinical teams. They will collaborate with existing researchers and educators in the Faculty, across King’s and more widely to apply and explore innovative ways of working with patients, families, and healthcare professionals to improve the quality of health care. They will be highly skilled in working in education or applied health research teams, capable of forging strategic partnerships with a wide range of external collaborators and supervising students.

Key responsibilities
Play an active role in the Faculty and King’s undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training, focussed on the programmes, especially educational content outlined above and below. This will include module and programme leadership, developing and delivering high quality innovative education and education and relevant materials, including incorporating King’s and Faculty research, and generating excellent student feedback.
Have a clear forward plan for sustaining and enhancing Faculty education, PhD supervision, and research consistent with the Faculty strategy, including to increase research / evidence informed education, multi- and interdisciplinary endeavours, digital offerings and improved student experience
•         [If on R&T contract] Contribute to and develop a sustainable, high quality applied health care research programme in areas core to one or more of the Faculty’s research Divisions or Institute and relevant to the educational focus of this post. You will work with relevant health care, charity and industry/ commercial research partners.
Main other responsibilities  

  • Actively participate in, and where appropriate plan and lead relevant modules and teaching programmes at King’s, with a strong focus on excellent student experience.  
  • Communicate and collaborate with students, patients, families, the public, policy makers and clinical colleagues and in research and teaching, and its relevance to care and policy.    
  • Work in collaboration and partnership with key stakeholders, institutions and organisations.  
  • Act as a Personal tutor, Link Lecturer and Academic Assessor, and Module Lead, supervising and coordinating MSc, BSc Dissertation/Projects, research electives/placements and King’s undergraduate summer programme projects to nurture capability. 
  • Actively participate in marking, course and programme development and assessment especially taking a lead in blended learning development. 
  • Proactively communicate and collaborate with research and teaching staff within the Faculty, across the University, and where appropriate lead collaborative developments.   
  • Actively engage in Patient and Public Involvement, play a major role in contributing to the Faculty platforms for this, including online and face-to-face interactions, and imbed Patient and Public Involvement into all research projects and teaching endeavours.  
  • Engage with the media, press, publicity, policy makers, practitioners, and others to deliver impact of the research and teaching to the benefit of patients, families, and society. 
  • Play a broader leadership role in the Faculty, contributing to the growth and development of our people and the wider organisation as appropriate to role. 
  • Actively participate in relevant audit and clinical governance activity, including audit of research and teaching activity, and team building activities  
  • Maintain highest standards of adherence to data protection, ethical and research governance principles and practices.   
  • Have and maintain a research passport, honorary contract if required and Good Clinical Practice in research.   
  • Complete all mandatory training in line with Faculty and College expectations  
  • Undertake relevant professional development in negotiation with line manager and PDR discussions.  
  • Maintain registration as a nurse in line with NMC requirements or as an AHP as appropriate.  

Research (if Research and Teaching contract):   

  • Contribute to the academic work of the Faculty, working with colleagues and clinical teams, with the aim of obtaining significant research funding and conducting research at an international and world-leading standard according to King’s performance framework 
  • Collaborate on, assist with and increasingly lead externally funded peer-reviewed collaborative research projects, programmes and fellowships, including winning funding from NIHR, UKRI, industrial/commercial funding and prestigious charities as co-investigator or Principal investigator.  
  • Form and grow external collaborations to enhance the quality of reach of our research programmes, linking with world leading academics and groups in related fields. 
  • Supervise, co-supervise and nurture clinical and non-clinical researchers (including PhD students and fellowships) to build the field for the future.  
  • Publish research findings in high quality peer view journals, with 1 – 2 publications that are internationally excellent or world leading each year.  

Research / Scholarship (if Academic Education contract):   

  • Co-author on one quality paper for a professional or academic journal or a book chapter relevant to Faculty research programmes or education innovations.  
  • Actively collaborate with Faculty research themes to enhance research informed education and evidence-based practice. 
  • Act as a collaborator to design innovations or projects to enhance research and integration with education. 
  • Contribute to staff development activities e.g. presentations, sharing good practice. 

To be considered for senior lecturer (research and teaching): 
- Research publications consistent with 3*-4* REF outputs in the last three-year period at least one of which as first or last author 
- Substantive grant income, sufficient to support research group and CI/PI on at least one current externally funded peer review grant, and a clearly defined major role within a large programme.  
-A clear forward plan for sustaining and enhancing research programme, consistent with the Faculty’s research strategy 
To be considered for senior lecturer (academic education pathway):
-Evidence of leading on collaborative engagement with students or practice partners to inform improvements in education provision  
-Evidence of strong publication history including acting as first or last author on two papers for a professional or academic journal or a book chapter related to education or healthcare practice in the last three years 
-A major education-related leadership role with evidence of impact on student experience

Skills, knowledge, and experience
Essential criteria (Research and Teaching or Academic Education Pathway)

  1. Registration as an Adult Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council OR as an Allied Health Care Professional 
  2. Able to facilitate and develop different forms of teaching and learning particularly in relation to blended and digital learning relevant to Faculty programmes, and to be creative and innovative in approach  
  3. In depth knowledge and/or expertise relevant to adult nursing and/or adult related healthcare 
  4. Experience of the planning, delivery, and evaluation of high-quality education at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels in education or practice setting with a strong focus on a high quality student experience and scholarship   
  5. Evidence of commitment to continued development in evidence-based practice, research methods and evidence relevant to care, with up-to-date knowledge, skills and accomplishments, able to supervise MSc and undergraduate student projects and critically appraise a wide range of relevant research, including data presentation and basic analysis  
  6. Ability to work well as an effective member of teams and to share and encourage good practice in scholarship, teaching and research and to inspire and motivate others, including in challenging environment 
  7. Excellent written, verbal and digital communication skills, in all formats, face to face, email, reports, written and for teaching 
  8. Publications, conference presentations and/or applicant on funding to support educational enhancement, service improvement, research and/or scholarship 
  9. Commitment to promoting equality, diversity and inclusivity for staff and students 
  10. Personal effectiveness, able to deliver high quality work and projects to deadlines, work efficiently and prioritise appropriately, and take individual responsibility for planning and undertaking work.


Essential criteria (Research and Teaching)  

  1. PhD or equivalent   
  2. Track record of peer-review publication and presentations that demonstrate international excellence or are world leading in terms of originality, rigor and significance in areas relevant to Faculty research themes. 
  3. Evidence of ability to secure research grant funding, demonstrated by previous experience and track record, involvement in research active teams, responsibilities, plans, awareness of funding schemes relevant to Faculty research themes. 

Essential criteria (Academic Education Pathway)
1.       MSc or equivalent 
2.       In depth understanding of education methods and approaches, including blended, digital learning  
Desirable criteria (Research and Teaching or Academic Education Pathway)
1.       A teaching qualification or equivalent 
2.        International and interprofessional education experience or course development
