Modern Languages provision is at the heart of a strong Arts and Humanities faculty portfolio. The University is committed to its continued success and future sustainability and views languages as a vital aspect of the University’s vision and commitment to being a truly global and diverse organisation. The University has recently undergone an exciting and strategic change programme to further strengthen language provision at Sheffield, in order to sustain and enhance our position as a leading provider of languages education in the UK whilst delivering a high-quality experience for all our students.

Our vision is that the University of Sheffield will be widely recognised as a leading provider of languages education in the UK and valued as a model of integrated research, learning, and teaching of languages and cultures. It is in this context that we are now looking for a new Head of Department to drive and lead in the delivery of our exciting new strategy.

The Head of the School of Languages and Cultures (SLC) is an exciting opportunity to provide transformational academic leadership and to develop the SLC to ensure it achieves the highest possible standards of excellence in all its activities. This highly influential and strategic position will play a key role in developing the languages and culture provision within a world-leading, globally recognised university, providing you with the ability to influence the direction of education in languages and cultures across the organisation.

As such, we expect the successful candidate to have a strong understanding of the challenges facing modern European languages education across the sector and have the ability to think innovatively to identify and take advantage of opportunities as they arise. Sheffield is renowned for its interdisciplinary approach which is focused on tackling some of the biggest challenges facing the world today. We therefore expect the new postholder to bring a passion for collaboration and partnership, alongside a strong commitment to promoting the importance of languages in today's society. Finally, you will be expected to lead by example in terms of demonstrating strong academic leadership in its widest sense, promoting academic citizenship, commitment to research and teaching in equal measure and fostering a culture of mentorship and progression.

Excellent Academic Leadership at all levels is critical to the delivery of the University of Sheffield vision to deliver life-enhancing research, innovation and education that not only transforms the lives of our graduates, but shapes the world we live in. We believe that the best way to achieve this is by fostering an ambitious, inclusive, collaborative community, and each Head of Department plays a vital role in creating this environment and ensuring the delivery of outstanding research, innovation, and education in their department.

We believe in the power of diversity to help us address big global challenges and aim to actively build diverse teams. We know that when people come together with different views, approaches and insights it leads to richer, more creative and innovative teaching and research, better understanding of student needs and aspirations and the highest level of student experience. We particularly welcome candidates from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds. All appointments will be based on merit.
