Job description

The Department of Women and Children's Health at King's College London is growing its research programme in Maternal and Fetal Medicine, including two new Clinical Senior Lecturer posts. These posts, supported jointly by The Fetal Medicine Foundation, King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, will enable outstanding post-doctoral clinical researchers to make the transition to independence. Individual mentoring, support and training tailored to the post-holder’s research interests will prepare them for securing a career development fellowship and project funding for their research. Each of these Clinical Senior Lecturer posts offers 5 years of salary, a PhD studentship, and a consumables budget of £20,000 p/a. These will be full-time posts within the university that combine an academic role in the Department with a clinical role in either King’s College Hospital or St Thomas’ Hospital, where post-holders will hold an honorary NHS Consultant contract. They will benefit from senior consultant support and back-up for the clinical aspects of their role matched with their specialist clinical interests and experience.  The post-holders will benefit from the Department’s links with the Women and Children’s theme and core facilities of the GSTT NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, and King's Health Partners Institute of Women and Children's Health. 

These newly-established posts offer an exciting opportunity and unusual flexibility for high-potential clinical researchers to shape both the KCL maternal and fetal medicine strategy, and their clinical role. Applicants should propose research projects that focus on maternal and child health throughout the life-course. It should broadly fit within a strategy to develop integrated research to improve clinical care and outcomes in Maternal and Fetal medicine and/ or to focus on the impact of gestational phenotypes on subsequent maternal and child health. The successful candidates will demonstrate clinical excellence in a relevant area of obstetrics and gynaecology that fits within the wide range of services offered by our partner NHS Trusts and have either experience, or interest, in development and delivery of medical undergraduate and postgraduate education.  

The post-holders will benefit from the research environment and infrastructure at King’s College. The Department of Women and Children’s Health is one of 5 in the School of Life Course Sciences  and has 32 clinical and non-clinical established academic posts, and associated research groups.  Its work includes an internationally recognised translational research programme in Obstetrics and Maternal Medicine, which includes investigation into hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, metabolic disorders of pregnancy and premature birth. This is an exciting time to join the School of Life Course Sciences as it will soon merge with the School of Population Health & Environmental Sciences. This will bring together very considerable clinical, scientific, and population/global health strengths.

These posts are offered as a King’s College London posts as a fixed-term contract for 5 years. The role-holders will be expected to complete both academic and clinical performance review annually and will be required to pass standard academic probation 3- years after taking-up their post.  

The role-holders will also hold an honorary contract with either King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust or Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust to enable them to undertake clinical duties (up to 5 PAs).  

These are full-time posts - 100% full time equivalent, which include 5 PAs of clinical duties.

Key Academic Responsibilities

  • Lead a research team to develop their own research interests and establish a network of collaborations with other researchers locally and in external organisations.   
  • Establish an independent clinical research portfolio that complements the existing strengths of the Department. 
  • Participate in development and delivery undergraduate (MBBS; iBSc) or postgraduate (MSc and clinical training) teaching / training. 
  • Attract substantial external research funding (e.g. a career development fellowship and project funding). 
  • Maintain a consistently high-level output of research publications and presentations.    
  • Supervise and train postgraduate students and postdoctoral research staff to ensure their effective development, and provide mentorship to more junior academic staff. 

Key Clinical Responsibilities

As a senior member contributing to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology team at either King’s College Hospital or Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust the role-holder will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high-quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients. This will include:  

  • Providing a first-class clinical service. 
  • Undertaking all work in accordance with Trust procedures and operation policies. 
  • Conducting clinical practice in accordance with the honorary contract and within the Trust’s service plans.  

The role-holder will undertake 5 or 5.5  PAs of clinical practice, which will include both day-time provision of Maternity and Gynaecology services and day-time, night-time, and night-time on-call commensurate with both the Trust’s current practice and on a pro-rata basis. It is not expected that fetal medicine scanning will be included in the clinical role.  

The detail of the clinical component of these posts will differ between the post with GSTT and KCH; the expected clinical job plan and timetable is included in the additional information provided with this recruitment pack. Following appointment a specific job plan will be agreed with the successful candidate. The clinics to which the role-holder will contribute will depend on their skills, experience and interests, and may include:  

  • Maternity – including: antenatal clinics, high-risk clinics, specialist antenatal clinics including Cardiac antenatal clinic at GSTT. 
  • Fetal and maternal medicine. 
  • Labour ward activity and inclusion on the Caesarean section surgery list. 
  • Postnatal Ward Round 

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.  

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria 

  1. A registerable medical qualification: MBBS or equivalent. 
  2. A higher academic degree: PhD or medical equivalent. 
  3. Royal College membership: MRCOG or equivalent. 
  4. Full registration with the GMC within 6 months of completion of CCT (or equivalent) on the day of interview.  
  5. Postdoctoral research experience in maternal medicine or fetal medicine with potential to develop own research group. 
  6. Evidence of having attracted research funding in a relevant area of discovery science or clinical medicine.  
  7. Record of publication in peer-reviewed scientific and / or clinical journals. 
  8. Experience of a range of aspects of Obstetrics and Gynaecology required for completion of CCT (or equivalent). 
  9. Sub-speciality qualification or ATSM relevant to high-risk pregnancy, maternal or fetal medicine.   
  10. Evidence of experience of working in busy clinical environment and organisation of services within a busy teaching hospital. 
  11. Ability to work effectively with a range of academic, clinical and professional services colleagues, including across organisations.  

Desirable criteria 

  1. Research in pregnancy hypertension, fetal growth, fetal loss, prematurity or other medical problems in pregnancy (or related areas). 
  2. Experience of leading externally-funded research. 
  3. Teaching qualification or evidence of commitment to teaching and exam preparation at an undergraduate and post-graduate level.
