Applications are invited for the post of Lecturer in Global Health (Teaching and Research) for the new Department of Health Studies across a highly interdisciplinary suite of postgraduate courses – predominantly on MSc course in Food Security, Sustainability and Biodiversity together with Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. 

Royal Holloway is establishing an exciting new Department of Health Studies and are building up a team to deliver the planned courses. You will be joining an already established small interdisciplinary team of health professionals in both human and environmental health who are highly experienced academics and researchers. You will also have the opportunity to grow your industrial and or charitable networks through our global advisory board and through highly established research centres through the School of Life Sciences and the Environment. 

The candidate will develop their own research portfolio and contribute teaching to a new MSc course in Food Security, Sustainability and Biodiversity, which is taught jointly with the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. They may also be asked to contribute to other MSc’s in the department, where appropriate. The candidate is expected to pursue their own research themes, with appropriate publications, collaboration building (especially with industrial and other organizational partners), student supervision, impact and income generation. The candidate will have a strong academic background in subjects relevant to the MSc course, which addresses the links between biodiversity, sustainable livelihoods and food security. Topics which are of interest include (but are not limited to) crop or livestock modelling, novel and orphan crops, crop or livestock adaptation, biodiversity in plant stress resilience, sustainable food production and agri-technologies, innovative weed management, agroecology, sustainable diets and healthy food, , natural compounds and materials, regenerative agriculture, seed systems and agricultural development. The candidate will be interested in the most pressing issues affecting our planet, from deforestation and climate change to pollution and the threats from extinctions, intensive agriculture and a growing human population. The candidate will be aware of the challenges that are facing different parts of the world and look to address these in their research. The candidate will also contribute to teaching research skills to our students, which may include ArcGIS, statistical analysis (e.g. in R), data visualisation, team working, field skills, science writing and science communication, depending on the skill set of the successful candidate. 

The MSc course is aligned to Royal Botanic Gardens Kew’s Manifesto for Change 2021-2030, https://www.kew.org/about-us/press-media/manifesto-for-change-2021, with which the candidate will be expect to be familiar.
