Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering at Faculty of Engineering, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), has a vacancy for a professor/associate professor in Sustainable Manufacturing at campus Gjøvik.

The campus is located 120 km North of Oslo. This is an area known for housing many manufacturing companies. Auto parts manufacturing, and the wood processing industry are extremely important to the area.

The Department participates in several research centers, including SFI Manufacturing which is a cross-disciplinary center for research-based innovation for competitive high value manufacturing in Norway. With respect to the wood process industry, NTNU participates in several research programs focusing on new advanced production processes and sustainable manufacturing.

The selected candidate is expected to conduct research in cooperation with national and international academic institutes, research centers and companies.

You will report to the Head of Department.

Responsibilities 

The professor/associate professor is expected to play a leading role in the research and research-based education in cooperation with existing staff at the department.

  • The successful candidate is expected to initialize and lead research within the field of Manufacturing Engineering with focus (but not limited) on Sustainable Manufacturing and Life Cycle Analysis.
  • The candidate is expected to take a leading role in the research-based education including supervision, teaching, and course development for Bachelor, Master and PhD students.
  • The candidate is expected to obtain and lead research projects from National and European Union (EU) funding programs. 

Required qualifications 

  • You must have an international research profile with strong publication record within Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Good experience and network within Manufacturing Engineering with particular focus on Sustainability in Manufacturing Systems.
  • You should demonstrate a potential for direct interactions with industrial partners.
  • Ability to initiate an individual and creative research program.
  • Long experience in attracting and leading research projects. 
  • Excellent oral and written English skills.

The experience and qualifications of the applicant will determine whether the candidate may be hired as associate professor, or a full professor. Specific requirements for each category are outlined below followed by requirements common for both categories.

Professor: 

The position of professor in the field of Manufacturing Engineering with interest on Sustainable Manufacturing requires that you meet the criteria outlined in § 1-2 of the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts.

  • Your research must be documented and of high international quality, showing both breadth and depth.
  • Research activity and output must demonstrate an independent research profile and the ability to take up new research issues.
  • Continuous research activity (excluding statutory leave) is a prerequisite for professorial positions.
  • Ability and experience in initiating and leading research in the field of Manufacturing Engineering with interest on Sustainable Manufacturing, and in obtaining external funding for research.

The main emphasis of the overall assessment of your application is on your submitted scientific works. Your scientific experience must be primarily in the field of Manufacturing Engineering with interest on Sustainable Manufacturing (or a comparable relevant field)

In addition to the requirements for basic educational competence, you must also document: 

  • The development of the quality of your own teaching and supervision of students over time 
  • Broad experience as a supervisor, preferably at a master’s/PhD level 
  • Participation in improving the quality of education in a professional environment 

Associate professor: 

The position of associate professor in the field of Sustainable Manufacturing requires that you meet the criteria outlined in § 1-4 of the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts.

  • Your PhD, or comparable academic work, must be within the field of Manufacturing Engineering with interest on Sustainable Manufacturing (or a comparable relevant field)

Other requirements (applicable to all):  

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU

Preferred qualifications

  • Documented, extensive scientific and technical qualifications in Manufacturing Engineering
  • Experience with Sustainability in Manufacturing Systems
  • Experience with Life Cycle Analysis
  • Experience with Cyber Physical Systems
  • Experience with System Architecture
  • Extensive and solid experience in EU project development and management
  • Experience with Big Data and Analysis
  • Oral and written skills in a Scandinavian language

  • Will be able to relay information with clarity and ease, both orally and written
  • Will seek out new opportunities at work, initiate activities, and project by working independently
  • Will work excellent together with colleagues, students and external stakeholders
  • Has the urge to take the extra step to include all students and maintain a good dialogue with them

We offer 

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position as Professor (code 1013) is normally from NOK 700 000 to NOK 1 000 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority, and the gross salary for the position of Associate Professor (code 1011) is normally from NOK 600 000 to NOK 900 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

Employment will be granted in accordance with the principles outlined in the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. Applicants should be aware that there may be changes in the working environment after employment has commenced.

It is a prerequisite that you are able to be present and accessible at the institution daily.

Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include a brief description of your participation.

While considering the best-qualified applicants, we will pay particular attention to personal qualities, your motivation for applying for the position, and your pedagogical skills and qualifications. Our assessment will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration.

We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.
