The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is a government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong. It offers programmes at various levels including Doctorate, Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees. ENGLISH LANGUAGE CENTRE
Instructor (two posts) (Ref. 22010502)
The English Language Centre (ELC) offers credit-bearing English language subjects and language enhancement programmes to students from all Faculties and Schools within the University. The ELC is mainly responsible for offering English subjects for Language and Communication Requirements which are mandatory to all Undergraduate students of the University. The Centre also offers Discipline-Specific Requirements subjects tailor made for more than 20 professional fields of the University’s programmes, and it offers numerous electives designed to enhance students’ communicative competencies. It also coordinates a number of extra-curricular activities and workshops and provides diverse self-learning materials and counselling services through the Centre for Independent Language Learning. The Centre currently has approximately 80 teaching staff members, with a group of about 20 technical and administrative personnel. The ELC has a strong commitment to quality learning and teaching. The appointees will be required to:
(a) teach a range of courses in English for Academic Purposes (EAP), English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and communication skills for undergraduate students;
(b) teach on the Centre’s other English language enhancement initiatives;
(c) participate in the pedagogical development and administration of ELC teaching and learning activities; and
(d) perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of Centre or his/her delegates.
Applicants should have:
(a) a recognised degree in a related discipline;
(b) a postgraduate teaching qualification;
(c) at least three years’ post-qualification relevant tertiary level teaching experience (experience in teaching upper secondary classes may also be considered);
(d) be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching; and
(e) be a highly proficient English speaker.
Applications are particularly welcome from teachers with expertise in discipline-related English, digital literacies, blended and online learning, and assessment design. Applicants should indicate in their cover letter how their qualifications and experience would enable them to effectively perform the duties of the post.
Remuneration and Conditions of Service
A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement. Applicants should state their current and expected salary in the application.
