The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is a government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong.  It offers programmes at various levels including Doctorate, Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees.  It has a full-time academic staff strength of around 1,200.  The total annual consolidated expenditure budget of the University is in excess of HK$7.6 billion.


Teaching Fellow (Ref. 22010501)

The English Language Centre (ELC) offers credit-bearing English language subjects and language enhancement programmes to students from all Faculties and Schools within the University. The ELC is mainly responsible for offering English subjects for Language and Communication Requirements which are mandatory to all Undergraduate students of the University. The Centre also offers Discipline-Specific Requirements subjects tailor made for more than 20 professional fields of the University’s programmes, and it offers numerous electives designed to enhance students’ communicative competencies. It also coordinates a number of extra-curricular activities and workshops and provides diverse self-learning materials and counselling services through the Centre for Independent Language Learning.  The Centre currently has approximately 80 teaching staff members, with a group of about 20 technical and administrative personnel. The appointee will be required to:

(a) teach a range of courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) including English for Academic Purposes (EAP) with a range of modes of teaching including digital education;

(b) teach and lead curriculum development in language education; and  

(c) perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of Centre or his/her delegates.


Applicants should:

(a) have a master’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics or Language Education;

(b) have a a recognised language teaching qualification;  

(c) have experience in course and instructional design;

(d) normally have at least four years’ relevant post-qualification experience at tertiary level;

(e) be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching; and

(f) be a highly proficient English speaker.  

Applicants should be active members within the discipline of language education as evidenced through participation in relevant conferences, the production of language teaching materials, and /or instructional design.  Applications are particularly welcome from teachers with expertise in EAP/academic literacy, multimodal communication, instructional and curriculum design or other areas of Applied Linguistics if of direct relevance to Language Education. 

Remuneration and Conditions of Service

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered.  Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract.  Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement.  Applicants should state their current and expected salary in the application.
