The University invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of Cheng Kar-Shun Robotics Institute.

The Institute

The Cheng Kar-Shun Robotics Institute (CKSRI) supports efforts by faculty and students working on robotics and autonomous systems across the campus. The Institute draws on innovations in sensors, devices, systems, networks, neuro-sciences, data analytics, and machine learning to catalyze new research by faculty and students in smart manufacturing, transportation, safety, healthcare, and a broad range of other applications that can benefit society.

CKSRI serves as a multidisciplinary platform for integrating, facilitating and enabling University-wide programs in robotics-related research, development and education. It highlights past and existing research and initiates new programs with seminars, meetings, research proposals, national and international collaborations with industry, institutions, and public outreach.

The Role

Reporting to the Vice-President for Research and Development, the Director of CKSRI is expected to provide leadership for the Institute and manage its diverse research and educational functions. The primary duties of the Director include fostering the recruitment of core faculty and staff in robotics and related systems, leading the development of degree programs in Robotics and overseeing the promotion of robotics related research initiatives and projects in relation to industrial and economic development of the region. Based in Hong Kong, the appointee will also play an active role in initiating research collaborations with HKUST (Guangzhou) Campus and the industry.

Terms & Applications / Nominations

The appointment will be concurrent with a substantive professorial appointment with one or two academic units. The initial term of directorship will be 3 years, and is renewable. Competitive remuneration and generous fringe benefits, including housing where appropriate, will be provided.  Outstanding faculty joining us will be considered for nomination of the Global STEM Professorship Scheme sponsored by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The awardee under the Scheme will be offered a highly competitive package to establish his/her research program in Hong Kong, including the setup of first-rate laboratories and recruitment of research support personnel.

Applications/nominations for the position are invited from well-qualified and accomplished scholars. In addition to extensive teaching and research experience, the successful candidate must have demonstrated capability to provide strong leadership in academic administration at tertiary level.  Proven capacity to interact effectively with government, industry and commercial sectors is an advantage.
