Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor (2 vacancies) (PR0417/21-22)

The Department invites applications for the above positions.

The Department has a key research niche in smart society emphasizing the research themes of (i) environmental and urban systems; (ii) populations and well-being; and (iii) learning, praxis, and governance. Together with other departments in the Faculty, which include Education Studies, Geography, Government and International Studies, History, and Sport, Physical Education and Health, the Department strives to build interdisciplinary synergy and international partnerships to address social issues of increasing local and international significance.

The research expertise of the Department clusters around four substantive areas: (i) gender, family and life course, (ii) social networks and social inequalities, (iii) globalisation and social change, and (iv) cultures and identities. One key feature of research in the Department is its convergence on Chinese societies, including Hong Kong, Mainland China, and other Chinese societies overseas.

Successful applicant(s) are expected to: (i) contribute to the research strengths of the Department, (ii) teach at undergraduate and/or graduate levels, and (iii) obtain competitive research grants.  Preference will be given to candidates whose research expertise aligns with the strategic research directions of the Department and Faculty.

Requirements:

  • A PhD in sociology or a closely related discipline at the time of appointment;
  • An active research programme or agenda;
  • A proven publication record in high impact international refereed journals;
  • Ability to conduct interdisciplinary research is a plus;
  • Competitive research grant records for appointment at the senior rank;
  • Demonstrable commitment to excellence in teaching; and
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues in a collegial working environment.

These are tenure-track positions with initial appointment on a fixed-term contract of up to three years commencing September 2022 or on a mutually agreed date. Re-appointment thereafter will be subject to performance and mutual agreement. Tenured appointment is expected to be attained within 6 years. Outstanding candidates at Associate Professor or above may be considered for direct tenure on appointment.

Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
