The internationally renowned Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Helsinki is Finland’s leading unit of research and teaching in Educational Sciences and Teacher Education. The Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Helsinki conducts research related to human growth, development and learning, multilingualism and justice in education, pedagogy and didactics. Research objects are educational systems, learning environments and learners. The Faculty of Educational Sciences is seeking a

PROFESSOR OF FOOD CULTURE

for a temporary substitute position during 1.8.2022-31.12.2026

The duties of the professor include research and teaching as well as development of teaching and learning in the field of food culture. In addition, the professor’s duties include supervision of theses and dissertations and other instruction, and management and development of research in national and international networks. The Professor provides teaching both in Finnish-speaking Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in educational sciences in the study track of Home Economics as well as in the English-speaking Master’s Degree program Human Nutrition and Food-related Behavior.

The position will focus especially on the social and cultural dimensions of food choice and food behaviour in Finland. Research duties will include i.e. deepening the multidisciplinary approach to food culture and a successful candidate will be expected to have experience of working on and/or managing research projects in the field of food culture. The professorship has been established with donated funds and will be financed by the support fund for food culture, administered by the University of Helsinki Funds.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and possess high-level academic qualifications and experience in heading scientific research, as well as the ability to provide research-based teaching of high quality and supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall show evidence of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. The holder of professorship shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.

The appointee must be competent in the language in which he or she provides instruction, in this case Finnish and English language.

Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish, he or she must attain a level of Finnish proficiency suitable for everyday communication within three years of taking up the position.

SELECTION CRITERIA

An individual recruited as a professor is expected to have strong academic merits and qualifications and be recognised as a significant opinion-leader in his or her own discipline.

When assessing the qualifications of each applicant, attention will be paid to both scholarly and teaching qualifications. Scholarly qualifications include scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience as well as scientific commissions, positions of trust and international relations. When considering the teaching qualifications of each applicant, attention will be focused on teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as participation in doctoral education. The applicant’s leadership and interaction skills as well as societal interaction and activity in the academic community will also be taken into account.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The salary for the position will be based on levels 8-9 of the requirement scheme for teaching and research positions in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The gross monthly salary will be approximately 5,000€−7,000€ depending on the appointee’s scholarly qualifications and career stage. A 6-month probation period is applied.
