The School

The successful candidate will be based in the School of Pacific Arts, Communication and Education (SPACE) which houses the disciplines of Literature, Academic English, Pacific Studies, Linguistics, Education and Journalism. SPACE also offers programmes in the vernacular languages of the South Pacific and is host to the Confucius Institute and the Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies. SPACE encourages collegiality and is invested in the cultivation of a dynamic scholarly community. The Opportunity

SPACE is seeking to appoint a motivated, experienced and talented individual who can make a significant contribution to research and teaching in primary and secondary teacher education, specialising in Language and Literacy. The successful applicant will be an active member of the school’s vibrant research culture, and will contribute to teaching, course development and supervision at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The applicant will also be able to undertake administrative duties commensurate with their position. The successful applicant will be located at the Laucala Campus in Fiji, although there may be opportunities to deliver short-term flexi-schools at other campuses in the region.

The Person We Seek

For consideration at the Lecturer level, applicant(s) must have:

  • A PhD in English or Education (with formal training in ESL and Literacy) with relevant tertiary teaching experience and/or research experience; or
  • In exceptional cases, a Master’s degree or professional qualification with relevant teaching experience or relevant industry/professional experience or a significant research profile;
  • An established record of successful teaching and course development at the primary, secondary and/or tertiary levels;
  • Some publications in peer-reviewed journals and books and evidence of participation in seminars and conferences;
  • Teaching experience in a second language context where English is the medium of instruction;
  • Sound understanding of the complexities of the ‘English’ subject in contexts where English is simultaneously being acquired as a second language and used as medium of instruction across much of the curriculum;
  • Sound understanding of the complexities of literacy acquisition and development in multilingual contexts; and
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas: English proficiency for English teachers, language awareness for teachers, bilingual education, ESL in the mainstream, genre and process approaches to writing, literature in the ESL classroom, or reading theories and processes.

For consideration at the Senior Lecturer level, applicant(s) must have:

  • A PhD in English or Education (with formal training in ESL and Literacy) with relevant tertiary teaching experience and/or research experience; or
  • In exceptional cases, a Master’s degree or professional qualification with relevant teaching experience or relevant industry/professional experience or a significant research profile;
  • Excellent record of research publications in peer-reviewed journals and books and evidence of participation in seminars and conferences;
  • A record of demonstrable scholarly and professional achievement and leadership in the relevant discipline;
  • An established record of successful teaching and course development at the primary, secondary and/or tertiary levels;
  • Teaching experience in a second language context where English is the medium of instruction;
  • Sound understanding of the complexities of the ‘English’ subject in contexts where English is simultaneously being acquired as a second language and used as medium of instruction across much of the curriculum;
  • Sound understanding of the complexities of literacy acquisition and development in multilingual contexts; and
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas: English proficiency for English teachers, language awareness for teachers, bilingual education, ESL in the mainstream, genre and process approaches to writing, literature in the ESL classroom, or reading theories and processes.

Preference will be given to applicant(s) who possess:

  • Experience in developing course materials for Distance and Flexible Learning;
  • Teaching experience in developing countries including the Pacific;
  • Sound knowledge of the very different language-in-education policies in place across the twelve member countries of the USP region;
  • Substantial understanding of Language and Literacy matters as they pertain to teachers who are themselves second language speakers of English; and
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching (PGCTT) or equivalent.

Remuneration

The position is available for a term of 5 years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.

Salary Range:  Lecturer – FJ$73,689 to FJ $96,958 per annum;

Senior Lecturer - FJ $99,971 to FJ $115,351 per annum;
