The International Institute (IHI) Zittau, a Central Academic Unit of TU Dresden, and the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research are seeking to fill the

Chair (W3) of Functional Soil Biodiversity Research

combined with the position of the

Head of Department of Soil Zoology

at Senckenberg Museum of Natural History Görlitz (SMNG)

starting January 1, 2023.

The Senckenberg Society for Nature Research (SGN), a member institution of the Leibniz Association, conducts integrative natural history research with almost 800 employees in leading research institutes in seven federal states. The Senckenberg Museum of Natural History Görlitz (SMNG) has research departments in the fields of soil zoology, zoology and botany and maintains a public museum exhibition. Senckenberg and TU Dresden cooperate closely in both research on and teaching of these topics.

At TU Dresden you (m/f/x) are responsible for teaching in the above-mentioned area. To this intent, a second affiliation is being sought for the Faculty of Biology. You will be involved in teaching the English-language Master’s study programs "Organismic and Molecular Biodiversity" at TU Dresden and "Ecosystem Services" at IHI Zittau, which are significantly supported by Senckenberg. We expect you to be willing and capable of teaching courses in English, to supervise students and academic staff, and to actively participate in curricula development and in academic committees and boards.

At SMNG you will head the Department of Soil Zoology with seven scientific sections and over five million objects in the collection. Together with the section heads, you are responsible for the development of the research profile, the collections and academic teaching activities of the department. Your research should address community ecology and functional biodiversity of soil animals, including modelling of associated data, within the context of the "Anthropocene Biodiversity Loss”. You will actively promote the international soil zoological data warehouse “Edaphobase” and its application in change-scenario development. We expect you to initiate and manage international research projects in cooperation with the section heads of the department, with other units within Senckenberg, as well as with national and international research institutes, supported by substantial acquirement of third-party funds and high-level publications. You will be editorially responsible for the international scientific journal “Soil Organisms”. You will also be closely involved in the general administration of the institute.

We are seeking a candidate with outstanding expertise in the field of soil biodiversity research, excellent knowledge of the ecology, systematics and integrative taxonomy of soil animals, and relevant teaching experience in zoology (invertebrates) and ecology. You have an outstanding record of publications on functional soil biodiversity research, and a keen interest in research based on scientific collections and databases (collectomics). You have extensive experience in the acquisition and management of third-party funded projects; motivation, commitment and the ability to work independently as a researcher; and are experienced in guiding staff and leading larger working groups. Experience in editorial activities of scientific journals is a further benefit. Applicants must fulfil the employment qualification requirements of § 58 of the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSFG).

If you have any further questions, please contact the head of the appointment committee of election, Prof. Martin Hofrichter, phone +49 3583 612 4121, email: martin.hofrichter@tu-dresden.de or Prof. Karsten Wesche from the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History Görlitz, phone +49 3581 4760 5300, email: karsten.wesche@senckenberg.de

TU Dresden and Senckenberg seek to employ more female professors. Hence, we particularly encourage women to apply. Applications from candidates with disabilities or those requiring additional support are very welcome. The University is a certified family-friendly university and offers a dual career service; also Senckenberg is certified as family friendly (audit berufundfamilie). If you have any questions about these topics, please contact the Equal Opportunities Officer of IHI Zittau (Ms. Uta Scheunig, +49 3583 612 4115) or the Equal Opportunities Officer at Senckenberg (Ms. Doerte Florack, doerte.florack@senckenberg.de), or the Representative of Employees with Disabilities at TU Dresden (Mr. Roberto Lemmrich, Tel.: +49 351 463 33175).

Please send your application, including a curriculum vitae and publication list, copies of the five most important publications, a list of your previous academic teaching activities (including the results of teaching evaluations of the last three years), a list of successfully acquired third-party funds, statements on research plans, concepts for collection development and collections-based research, ideas about teaching in relevant fields, and a letter in which you explain your motivation for applying by February 21, 2022 (stamped arrival date applies) to: TU Dresden, IHI Zittau, Direktor Prof. Dr. Thorsten Claus, Markt 23, 02763 Zittau, Germany or in electronic form (CD, USB storage medium or via the SecureMail Portal of the TU Dresden, https://securemail.tu-dresden.de to direktor.ihi@tu-dresden.de.) In the course of further proceedings, the documents will also be available to the search committee and the board of directors of the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research.
