The Charles Wilson 'Smart & Scale Up' (S&S) SME Programme

Durham University Business School (DUBS) was successful in obtaining £3.5 Million from Charles Wilson (until recently CEO of Booker Group) and his partner Dr Rowena Olegario to support a regional SME initiative called 'Smart & Scale Up' (S&S). This aim of this nine-year funding (starting from 2021) S&S initiative is to 1) Increase in innovation activities across the region, and 2) Support and development of new business models to support digital growth. To address these challenges, the project has identified 4 themes research themes: Emerging Technology adoption in SMEs; Supply Chains; Leadership; New Business Models. These four themes happen to be existing areas of expertise within the Department of Management & Marketing. Additional aims of the programme (which will eventually extend over 2021-2029) are to:

  1. Provide insightful and practical support through rigorous and relevant research and professional development to regional and small businesses to underpin long-term economic recovery, redevelopment and resilience in the North East's SME sector.
  2. Inspire and further develop a sense of purpose across the School to make a difference to people's lives and businesses through research, learning and deeper engagement.
  3. Support Durham University Business School's ambition as a top European Business School.
  4. Accelerate plans to recruit up to 10 FTE academic posts around Small Business Research, including joint appointments with other departments and provide a platform for a multi-disciplinary cluster of expertise focused on SMEs.
  5. Provide a strong foundation to position the School as an international centre of excellence in Small Business Research focused on technology, innovation and economic development, productivity and leadership.
  6. Galvanise action in the North-East to smart and scale up for economic recovery and resilience and development.
