About the opportunity

The National Imaging Facility (NIF) is a large multi-million-dollar project initiative providing state-of-the-art imaging capability of humans, animals, plants and materials for the Australian research community. The position is located at the University’s NIF node based at the Brain and Mind Centre and Charles Perkins Centre.

As a NIF Preclinical Imaging Facility Fellow, you will be part of a network of NIF Fellows supporting NIF activities at a local and national level. In this role you will be a key point of contact for research and activities at the preclinical imaging equipment of the NIF node, particularly related to molecular imaging. The NIF Preclinical Imaging Facility Fellow plays a critical role in the success of NIF by providing academic leadership, strategic advice to imaging and non-imaging scientists on the best tools and protocols, the optimal use of imaging modalities and correct experiments in addition to support operating the imaging instruments as required. You will be required to actively participate in the various networking and promotional opportunities for inter-nodal collaborations and communicate NIF’s capacity to the wider scientific community, both in academia and industry. 

The role will also require you to:

  • engage with external and internal users to help increase facility utilisation
  • oversee the coordination of preclinical imaging studies including related to access to PET radiochemistry tracers and take responsibility for the quality of data produced by the facility
  • advise on appropriate imaging methodology and protocols
  • develop analysis tools and assist or train users with their data analysis
  • implement state of the art imaging methods in preclinical imaging systems
  • provide operational support to end-users on the imaging platforms
  • organise appropriate educational and training programs for potential end-users
  • participate in appropriate teaching and training programs
  • perform QA/QC phantom studies as need be
  • advise access to the research computing platform by end-users
  • contribute to appropriate committee meetings
  • coordinate with the project portal database manager to ensure information on project status is up to date
  • engage with NIF Fellows both from the USYD node and from other Australian NIF nodes
  • foster strong links with industry and business users (existing and new) of the node
  • collaborate with users of node on research projects 
  • collaborate with Sydney Imaging facility staff, researchers, and vendors to perform risk assessments and prepare safe work procedures for research projects
  • be responsible for the preclinical imaging NIF reporting requirements from USYD
  • implement and further develop preclinical imaging methods (acquisition, processing, and/or modelling)
  • contribute to the production of published works.

About you

  • a PhD in engineering, physics or relevant subject area
  • advanced knowledge and extensive experience in PET, with particular preference in a preclinical research setting
  • research experience in medical image processing, particularly PET image reconstruction and quantitative analysis
  • the ability to engage and support diverse research programs utilising PET, MRI and related imaging techniques
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team
  • high level organisational skills with the ability to set priorities to meet deadlines
  • experience working with small animals under animal ethics code of practice

Experience with MRI pulse sequence programming, image reconstruction and signal processing are highly desirable.
