in Decision Analytics and Risk

As a member of the Faculty Graduate School, the Southampton Business School’s postgraduate research students are a highly valued part of our community and are integral to the continued success of the Business School and of the University as a whole. Our PhD programme has been awarded +3 recognition for full-time students by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and has also received research studentships from ESRC and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for its doctoral programme. We offer a stimulating, challenging and dynamic research environment for our PhD students. 

The Department of Decision Analytics and Risk brings together established specialisms within Southampton Business School with a strong track record in research. We combine excellence in management sciences, decision analysis and risk management, operations, and business analytics working with many major international companies and educating future specialists across industry and commerce. The department unites knowledge and experience across the critical components of decision analysis and their application to strategic, tactical and operational scenarios. Our members' areas of expertise include business analytics that harnesses today’s big data and produces information to support decisions as well as algorithms to make decisions automatically; risk analysis that provides assessment and quantification of risk and an understanding of risk behaviour; information systems that involve the understanding of socio-technical challenges involving the digitalization of society; management science that provides a range of tools for scenario analysis, forecasting, optimisation and simulation; and operations management that involves project management, supply chain management and sustainability.

The scholarships consist of full tuition fees and an annual stipend of £15,509 (£1,292.42 per month) for 3 years, which are open to both UK, EU and international/overseas students. Ideal candidates will possess a bachelor’s degree with first-class and master’s degree with distinction or equivalent in any of our broad disciplines of business and management. Candidates will also need to meet our standard admission requirements for PhD students in addition to a strong research proposal.
