As a member of the Faculty Graduate School, the Southampton Business School’s postgraduate research students are a highly valued part of our community and are integral to the continued success of the Business School and of the University as a whole. Our PhD programme has been awarded +3 recognition for full-time students by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and has also received research studentships from ESRC and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for its doctoral programme. We offer a stimulating, challenging and dynamic research environment for our PhD students.

The department of Digital and Data-Driven Marketing staff focus on real-life and contemporary marketing challenges within B2C, B2B and C2C contexts. Our expert researchers employ sectoral lenses that include small and large enterprises, for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, to understand how technologies and innovative developments enhance customer experience, boost firm performance, and contribute to societal well-being. Our research enables local, regional, national and global organizations in tackling the current and future marketing challenges. Members regularly publish in top-tier academic journals such as the Journal of Retailing, Journal of World Business, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Advertising Research, Journal of Advertising, Journal of Business Research, Harvard Business Review (Online), European Journal of Marketing, Psychology and Marketing, Tourism Management, and Industrial Marketing Management among others. Members also publish in popular outlets such as BBC, the Guardian, the Sunday Times, Admap, The Conversation, Adweek, the Independent, and are frequently sought for commentary in the media on current marketing issues and as keynote speakers at international academic and industry conferences.

We welcome applications for fully funded PhD scholarships in marketing especially addressing the following subject areas:

  • Marketing challenges in the digital domain
  • Consumer behaviour and sustainability 

The successful candidate, however, is welcome to study the topic of his/her interest. Interested applicants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the research interests and publications of DDDM staff members in the domains of advertising, branding, consumer behaviour, digital and social media marketing, marketing analytics, international marketing, relationship marketing, retailing and marketing strategy. The scholarships consist of full tuition fees and annual stipend of £15,509 (£1,292.42 per month) for 3 years, which are open to both UK, EU and international/overseas students. Ideal candidates will possess bachelor’s degree with first class and master’s degree with distinction or equivalent in any of our broad disciplines of business and management. Candidates will also need to meet our standard admission requirements for PhD students in addition to a strong research proposal.
