PhD Studentship in Human Resource Management & Organisational Behaviour
HRM & OB at Southampton Business School is a multidisciplinary department comprising management scholars, economists, psychologists, and sociologists, that together undertake leading research in the fields of Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour, as these fields are understood under the specific disciplinary lenses of the Department’s people.
As part of the University of Southampton – a top 100 university (QS & U.S. News world rankings) and a founding member of the Russell Group – the Centre for Research in Work and Organizations (CRWO) enjoys a global reputation for academic excellence in research and teaching. HRM & OB members conduct world-class theoretical and empirical research, and publish regularly in leading international academic outlets, such as the British Journal of Management, British Journal of Industrial Relations, Gender, Work & Organization, Human Relations, Human Resource Management, Human Resource Management Journal, The International Journal of Human Resource Management, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Management, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Organization Studies, Public Management Review, Research Policy, and Work, Employment and Society.
For this scholarship, we welcome outstanding PhD project proposals from candidates with an interest in Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour, as well as in associated fields, such as industrial/employment relations, employment studies, organisation studies, labour economics, and work sociology. The successful candidate will be free to study the topic of their interest. However, prospective candidates are advised to consult the profiles and research interests of the people in our Department in order to make sure that their proposed topic aligns with the research profile of the Department. Research topics can be in the following indicative broad areas: alternative theorising of leadership, automation, careers and skills, digital media, technologies and people, corporate social responsibility, sustainability and ethics, entrepreneurship and self-employment, human resource development, independent professionals, individual and organisational responses to hardship, labour market institutions and workplace trade unions, new ways of working, power in technological change programmes, work/non-work interface, work quality and well-being, and workforce diversity and inequalities. We can support applicants who use core and advanced quantitative, qualitative, digital, creative, visual, mixed and multimodal methods.
The Department has a very active and vibrant PhD programme, as part of a School with over 150 PhD students, and your research study will be supervised by leading international scholars. The scholarships consist of full tuition fees and annual stipend of £15,509 (£1,292.42 per month) for 3 years, which are open to both UK, EU and international/overseas students. Ideal candidates will possess bachelor’s degree with first class and master’s degree with distinction or equivalent in any of our broad disciplines of business and management. Candidates will also need to meet our standard admission requirements for PhD students in addition to a strong research proposal.
