About the opportunity

The Film Studies Program in the Department of Art History is seeking a Lecturer in Film Studies who specialises in Asian Cinema to join its dynamic and diverse team. Expertise may include one or more national and transnational cinemas, whether focused on contemporary cinemas or film histories, or its various scholarly subfields such as global cinema studies, auteur cinema studies, and regional new wave cinemas studies. We are especially interested in ambitious candidates who have expertise in East Asian and Southeast Asian cinemas, and who exhibit a capacity to build interdisciplinary relationships and networks within the University, as part of a remit to strengthen this area of the Film Studies Program.

Film Studies is an interdisciplinary program that draws on research-led teaching strengths across the Department, School and Faculty, as well as those of the core Program, including film aesthetics, film philosophy, film history (early and silent cinema), European cinema, feminist and queer film studies, and documentary film. As a lecturer within the Film Studies program, you will join a group of leading film scholars, a thriving teaching and learning environment, and contribute to a vibrant research culture (that includes reading groups, scholarly networks, and community outreach).

Your key responsibilities will be to:

Research

• have a developed research plan which includes clear pathways to book publication, other outputs including non-traditional research outputs such as video essays, and other outcomes that have impact
• submit articles and essays to top-ranked journals in Film Studies
• maintain an ambitious program of research and work with colleagues in the Department and across the University to create research partnerships and projects leading to grant applications and outcomes
• apply for internal and external grants to support scholarship and teaching.

Teaching

• coordinate units of study and teach at all levels of the Film Studies undergraduate major, and in future into potential Postgraduate courses
• contribute significantly to core course teaching in junior and upper-level units, as well as to more specialist courses at senior level
• teach into the Film Studies Honours program and supervise Honours theses as required
• supervise Higher Degree by Research (HDR) theses as required and appropriate in terms of research expertise and supervision experience
• be student-oriented in curriculum design and renovation, including regularly taking account of unit of study feedback and consulting with students on teaching, units of study, and other aspects of the Film Studies program
• contribute to cultivating a Film Studies research culture by leading activities such as reading groups, annual HDR symposia, and other workshops and events as required
• contribute to regular student orientation, information and recruitment activities
• collaborate closely with other Film Studies colleagues, and the Film Studies Program Director in developing the Film Studies Program.

About you

We are looking for a Lecturer in Film Studies who has:

• PhD in Film Studies or related area
• teaching experience at tertiary level in Film Studies
• commitment to developing and advancing curricula within the Film Studies program
• commitment to engage in teaching and learning innovation
• demonstrated research track record (including books, journal articles, or book chapters) in Film Studies
• ability to articulate a plausible and ambitious 3-year research plan
• proven knowledge and expertise in Asian cinema studies and/or transnational/transcultural cinema studies
• established research outcomes through peer group and broader community impact esteem (including internal and external funding of research activity, conference participation, awards, elected memberships or fellowships, critical acclaim for published work)
• demonstrated ability to work professionally as part of a team, cooperating with colleagues in a collegial and effective manner within the Department of Art History and beyond, as well as with external partners
