Job Details

With over 50 years of academic excellence and having been named the UK's University of the Year for Social Inclusion in 2020 by The Times and Sunday Times, the University of Bradford has continued to grow its international reputation and innovative course provision. With almost 10,000 students, the University is pioneering in developing new course subjects, reflecting and anticipating the needs of an increasingly diverse and interconnected world, paying particular attention to the needs of employers, students, and society as a whole.

The School of Social Sciences has a long-established track record in teaching and research relating to various academic disciplines including sociology, criminology, psychology, social work as well as peace and development studies. The Department of Sociology and Criminology, within the School of Social Sciences at the University of Bradford recruits strongly for the University and contributes to its REF submission, but is currently undertaking a review of its provision, framed by a strategic plan to develop and grow degrees in which Criminology and Sociology feature heavily.

As a result, the School is committed to supporting this strategy with the appointment of an Associate Professor in Criminology on a permanent basis. The ideal candidate will have a PhD and publications in Criminology or related field. You will contribute to existing degree programmes, including our Foundation Year and Undergraduate degrees (BA Sociology; BA Criminology and Criminal Behaviour). Associate Professor candidates will need to evidence programme leadership experience, and evidence of being able to deliver excellent learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In order to deliver research informed teaching, evidence of scholarship in relevant fields is essential. Applications from candidates with interests in cyber-crime, white-collar crime and young offenders are especially welcome.

The successful candidate will lead and contribute to the development and direction of the Department, focusing on developing research as well as course review and design. This will be done within a team of highly skilled and motivated academics, who are committed to strengthening the subject within the School and Faculty.

Along with your teaching and learning responsibilities, you are expected to contribute to the Department's continuing success. The successful candidate will have a research track record at 3* or 4* CABS journal level and continue to be research active with evidence of grant capture activity and ambition. Evidence of interest in broad areas of ethnic relations, multiculturalism as well as equalities and diversity would also be welcome.

The University of Bradford is committed to providing a supportive and developmental environment to all staff through mentoring by experienced academic colleagues and maintain effective personal development plans and processes.

This is a full-time, permanent post.

As an equal opportunities employer, we value a diverse workforce and welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates. However, we particularly welcome applications from minority ethnic academics, as they are under-represented across the HE sector. All appointments will be made on merit.

Informal enquiries may be made to Dr. Yunis Alam, Head of Sociology and Criminology (m.y.alam1@bradford.ac.uk) or Professor Peter Mitchell, Head of School of Social Sciences (p.mitchell1@bradford.ac.uk).
