We are seeking to recruit a post-doctoral researcher with expertise in human-centred security or privacy to work in Northumbria University’s Department of Computer and Information Sciences as part of the new PETRAS IoT Centre for Excellence funded PrivIoT project.

The researcher will work with the multidisciplinary team consisting of other academic institutions (Manchester, Royal Holloway, and Nottingham) and industry partners (OTASKI, Toshiba, CybSafe, NCSC, and Northumbria Police) to better understand the harms that can arise from the combination of IoT devices and demand-side management technologies in the home environment. In particular, we are interested in 1.) how these can affect adults working from home and older adults, and 2.) the most effective methods for communicating these harms in order to ensure that these populations can proactively protect themselves.

For this post, we are seeking an individual with expertise in human-centred security or privacy. Knowledge of IoT systems is also desirable. It is expected the successful candidate will have a PhD (or one that is close to completion) in human-computer interaction or a closely related field. Ideally the successful candidate will have experience of working within interdisciplinary teams or demonstrate a strong ambition to work in them.

Excellent communication skills and experience with both qualitative and quantitative research methods is essential. In particular, knowledge and experience of designing and running user-centred workshops or interviews with different populations is desired. The researcher will ideally be based at the Newcastle campus within our state-of-the-art £7m CIS building. The post is fixed-term for 8 months full-time.

Northumbria University is recognised as an Academic Centre for Excellence in Cyber Security Research (ACE-CSR) by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Centre (EPSRC) and is home to one of the largest and most successful Human Computer Interaction groups in the world.
