At TU Dresden, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Department of Geosciences, Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, the Junior Professorship in Environmental Remote Sensing offers a project position as

Research Associate (m/f/x)

(subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)

starting March 1, 2022. The position comprises 65 % of the fulltime weekly hours and is limited until September 30, 2024. The period of employment is governed by § 2 (2) Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz-WissZeitVG).

Tasks: Within the DFG-funded project “PhenoFeedBacks”, you will investigate how large-scale changes in phenology affect biophysical feedbacks in the Earth system. Specifically you will investigate effects of phenology on land surface temperature, surface energy balance, vegetation water content, and fire risks by using various Earth observation datasets and methods from explainable machine learning. You will gather, process and analyse remote sensing data; implement, train, evaluate and analyse machine learning models; and write and publish scientific publications and presentation at international conferences and workshops.

Requirements: university degree and, if applicable, PhD degree in the field of geosciences, environmental sciences or physics with focus on meteorology/climate, biogeography, remote sensing or machine learning; knowledge in the analysis of remote sensing and climate data with R and/or Python; practical experiences in Linux/Unix; scientific compelling MSc thesis or first scientific publications; interest in global environmental and climate change; high capacity for team work and communication skills; business fluent written and oral English skills. Knowledge in German language would be advantageous but is not required. Experiences in deep learning methods and methods from explainable machine learning are desirable.
