Job description
 
The post holder will be part of the School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences IT team, which is responsible for all aspects of the operation and strategic development of the computing infrastructure that supports the clinical and research activities of the School.
 
The post holder in collaboration with the other members of the IT team will support all workstations and servers deployed within the School. Currently there are about 600 members of staff in the School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences. The current infrastructure relies on multiple platforms and technologies, including Windows and Linux clients and servers, Mac laptops and workstation, High Performance Computing (HPC) systems, storage systems and GPU workstations and servers. 
 
The post holder should be familiar with most of these technologies. 
 
The computer and clinical systems in the School are deployed on two networks, one administered by KCL and one by the GSTT (Guy’s and Saint Thomas’s NHS Trust). The post holder will need to liaise with both central KCL and GSTT IT services to request support when necessary. 
 
Part of the data collected and processed in the School is of sensitive nature and must be handled with due diligence and following relevant clinical governance procedures. 
 
The successful applicant’s responsibilities will include client and server system administration and deployments, configuring systems on the local network, setting up hardware, installing and maintaining software, managing software licensing, data backups and virtualised systems (Nutanix, KVM, Hyper-V, etc.) and more. 
 
The post holder is expected to be a proactive individual, able to work both independently and as part of a team and able to lead on small/medium IT projects. This is an excellent opportunity for an applicant willing to learn new skills and share knowledge with other members of the team.

Key responsibilities
 
Communication and networking: The successful applicant will regularly have to communicate complex technical information to both technical and non-technical users. They are expected to have excellent written and oral communication skills in English. They will also need to efficiently coordinate their work with other members of the IT team and share information about progress on tasks and projects assigned to them.  
 
Decision making, planning and problem solving: As part of this role, the applicant will often need to assess technical problems and autonomously, or in collaboration with other members of the IT team, plan effective and lasting solutions. They will be also expected to proactively contribute ideas to improve the IT service for the School, identifying weaknesses and problems and proposing adequate solutions and improvements. 
 
Service delivery: Members of the IT team are expected to be able to assess, understand and identify solutions to complex technical problems, and to help both users and junior member of staff providing support and monitoring the effectiveness of the services deployed. 
The applicant will be also responsible for leading on small and medium IT projects, organising their own work and that of other members of the IT team, and coordinating with stakeholder to deliver successfully and on time.  
 
Analysis and research: In the duty of IT support for cutting-edge research, and in collaboration with Senior IT managers , the successful applicant will have to advise academics and researchers with their questions of technical nature, helping them to identify suitable solutions to their requirements and advising on proper data governance and handling. 
 
Teamwork, teaching and development: The role requires all members of the IT team to be able to work independently but also in coordination with the rest of the team, keeping the colleagues updated on their progress on assigned tasks. They will follow directives from Senior IT managers and guide/help junior colleagues to achieve common goals and improve the service offered. 
 
Occasionally they might be required to perform small seminars to educate users on agreed procedures and best practices. 
 
Physical demand and working environment: You will carry out most of your daily work using DSE equipment. Occasionally you might have to contribute with physical work, lifting weights with other members of the staff, for example during the installation of new servers in the racks. 
 
Pastoral care: The role includes pastoral care duties, keeping a positive and friendly attitude to colleagues and to students and academics alike. 
 
Knowledge, Experience and skills: The applicants are expected to have relevant qualification and few years of experience in a similar role, either in the public or private sector. Skills and knowledge will be tested during the interview, possibly with a practical test to assess problem-solving capabilities and approach to solutions. 
 
You may be required to work irregular hours in accordance with the needs of the role.

Skills, knowledge, and experience 
 
Essential criteria 
 
1.       Hons degree in relevant numerate discipline or demonstrable multi-year experience in a similar role 
2.       Current knowledge of Linux / Unix and Windows operating systems and associated infrastructure and services + Mac OS X 
3.       Current knowledge of configuration and installation of Windows client and server systems  
4.       Current knowledge of configuration and installation of Linux client and server systems, particularly Ubuntu Linux and RedHat/CentOS 
5.       A thorough knowledge of network and internet protocols, including network security 
6.       Management of data backup and restore 
7.       Knowledge of Wireless networking configuration and principles 
8.       General knowledge of PC hardware architecture  
9.       Knowledge of Unix and/or Windows shell scripting language (bash, Perl, Python, Powershell etc.)  
10.   Extensive post-training systems administration and networking experience 
11.   Linux and Windows installation and support 
12.   Enthusiastic and imaginative approach to new projects and tasks 
13.   Flexible approach to hours of work and duties 
14.   Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues in many disciplines 
 
Desirable criteria 
 
1.       State-registered degree (or equivalent) in computing or other relevant subject 
2.       Experience of NetApp or Dell/EMC enterprise storage systems 
3.       Knowledge of programming languages (C/C++, Matlab, Java) 
4.       Familiarity with current guidelines and legislation relating to handling of confidential patient data 
5.       Post-training experience working with medical imaging data and knowledge of medical image processing, image display and analysis, multimodality imaging etc 
6.       Experience in Mac systems installation and support, Maintaining a data backup regime, hospital patient information systems (RIS, PACS etc) and of IT in clinical and research medical imaging environments
