Job description
 
The School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences is looking for an IT Officer to provide first line support to School members.  
 
The post holder will be part of the School IT support team and will be involved in all aspects of the operation and development of the computing infrastructure that supports the activities of the School.  
 
The successful candidate will help to maintain the IT infrastructure, support the users, and proactively contribute to the development of the IT services and computer resources available for researchers in the School.
   
The candidate is expected to be capable of working both independently and as a member of the team.  They will possess relevant qualifications and experience and be an experienced IT professional with good, demonstrable, and effective operational management and end user support experience. 
 
The successful candidate will provide high-quality and an effective helpdesk support to all users and will contribute to day-to-day support for IT operations in the School. 
 
In collaboration with the other members of the IT team, the post holder will deploy, configure and maintain laptops, workstations and servers, running Windows, Mac OS X and Ubuntu Linux. 
 
As part of the School IT team, you will help to manage lab equipment, clinical devices (MRI scanners and Ultrasound devices etc.) and an ever-expanding number of Linux and Windows servers (physical and virtual), a scalable large storage system and HPC systems. 
 
Part of the data collected and processed in the School is of sensitive nature, and the successful candidate is expected to handle data with due diligence and following relevant clinical governance procedures and other SOPs, with particular attention to the GDPR regulation. 
 
Responsibilities will include client and server installation and administration, support to users, management of PCs and printers, helping users with software and networking issues, management of licenses, backups, virtualisation and more. 
The post holder is expected to be a positive and proactive individual, and a team player willing to share the knowledge with the other members of the team and with a “can do” attitude towards new projects and technologies. 
 
This post will be offered on an indefinite contract  
This is a full-time post

Key responsibilities

  • Helpdesk support for users  
  • Installation and configuration of PCs and workstation in a networked environment 
  • Security updates and upgrades 
  • Backup and recovery 
  • Advise users on hardware and software requests and place orders with 3rd party suppliers through KCL procurement 
  • Create and maintain documentation for the IT team and for the users on common tasks 
  • Create and manage users in Active Directory and other centralised systems 
  • Deploy and manage automation tools for the management of systems. 

 
The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.  
 
Skills, knowledge, and experience 
 
Essential criteria  

 
1.       Good/Excellent knowledge of the installation and configuration of common operating systems: Windows, Linux and Mac OSX 
2.       Experience of software installation and management, including licenses 
3.       A thorough knowledge of TCP/IP network configuration and protocols (DHCP, DNS, SSH, HTTP, etc.) 
4.       Knowledge of main data sharing protocols used in Windows and Linux environment (SMB/CIFS, NFS, etc.) 
5.       Higher education degree in Computer Science, Electronic engineering or relevant experience in managing IT environments 
6.       Knowledge of one or more scripting or programming languages (Bash, PowerShell, Python, etc.) 
7.       Knowledge of main data protection regulations 
8.       Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English 
 
Desirable criteria
 
1.   Experience in liaising with 3rd party suppliers for orders  
2.   Experience in working in university/research environment and/or clinical environment  
3.   Experience of data backup and restore technologies
