King’s College London

Senior Vice-President (Academic)

One of the top 10 UK universities in the world (QS World University Rankings, 2022), the fourth oldest university in England, King’s College London has influenced many of the advances that shape modern life.  These include pivotal advancements such as the discovery of the structure of DNA; research that led to the development of radio, television, mobile phones and radar; critical innovations in medicine and healthcare, including antiseptic surgery and palliative care.  King’s has over 35,000 students (including more than 12,800 postgraduates) from some 150 countries and over 8,500 employees.

Our world has been upended by Covid – and as the pandemic continues neither universities nor society will go back to the old normal.  The approach to university education is bound to evolve, as will the nature of work in society and universities.  Our students are passionate about the environment, sustainability and equality more than ever before – and we will need to prepare them so that they can have the impact and make the change they would like to see. - Professor Shitij Kapur is the President & Principal, King’s College London

The new role of SVP (Academic) has been created to bring together the unique strengths of King’s to respond and reshape itself.  The SVP(A) is the chief academic officer reporting to the President & Principal.  Working with the Executive Deans, the Vice Presidents of Education and Research and along with other Senior Vice Presidents, the SVP(A) will have the opportunity to align work across Faculties and enhance inter-faculty and interdisciplinary work in the service of the College’s mission.  This is a pivotal moment to join King’s as it embarks on a new strategic cycle, and an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the College’s academic performance, student experience, civic and international leadership.

You will be a highly accomplished academic leader with tested skills gained at DVC/PVC or Executive Dean/Head of College level and a record of inspiring and delivering innovation, change and organisational improvement.  You will have a record of effecting positive cultural and operational change in an academic context, and uniting disparate parts of an institution under a cohesive strategic direction.  You will have significant experience of strategic and operational planning and budgeting.  You will have a record of building high performing teams and achieving stretching objectives in a competitive environment.

You will bring an authentic, engaging interpersonal style that values and thrives on interacting with faculty members across diverse academic units.  You will demonstrate commitment to developing and sustaining a diverse, inclusive, and nurturing community for faculty, staff, and students.  And you will have a collaborative approach to leadership and shared governance, coupled with the ability to make and stand-by tough decisions.
