With a strong experimental track record in quantum optics or nanofabrication you will to contribute to our colour centres research activities.

You will work inside a European project that aims to develop networked quantum technologies based on colour centres in silicon carbide that uniquely possess strong optical transitions in the telecom O-band (1260-1360 nm). Silicon carbide is a material fully compatible with standard industrial micro-electronic fabrication processes, giving scope for integration and scalability for future quantum devices. This platform offers the promise to provide the creation of robust, transcontinental quantum information links, compatible with existing infrastructure, thereby ushering in the era of physically secure encryption and networked quantum computation.

Your research will focus on light-matter interface engineering using nanostructured optical components (including photonic crystals and waveguides) to facilitate isolation of single emitters and improve the manipulation and readout of the spin states. The experiments will be performed in a laboratory equipped with state of the art instruments and will be supported by the world-leading facilities of the Southampton Nanofabrication Centre.

Quantum nanoPhotonics (QnP) is an experimental research group at the University of Southampton, led by Dr Alberto Politi. QnP works on the development of optical quantum technologies, including light-matter interaction in silicon carbide, photonic networks for quantum simulation based on single photons and generation and manipulation of non-classical light on chip for continuous variable quantum optics. You will enjoy working in a vibrant and collaborative team, more information is available on the QnP group website.

The consortium: QuanTELCO is a H2020 FET-Open project comprising seven institutions across Europe, all of which have world-leading research activities in silicon carbide.

The aim of this project is to overcome the bottleneck in quantum networks by employing a radically transformative approach based on telecom-wavelength spin centres in silicon carbide. Extensive interactions among participants will take place through exchange visits, network meetings, publications and conferences.

To be successful you will have a PhD* (or equivalent professional qualifications and experience) in experimental quantum optics or solid state physics or a closely related field, with prior research experience in in one or more of the following experimental fields: quantum physics, preferably quantum optics or solid state physics, nanofabrication, integrated photonics. You will demonstrate excellent communications skills to effectively promulgate new and complex information, have the the ability to maintain accurate records, to work independently and take responsibility in an active team. An ability to prepare scientific publications and present results at local, national and international research meetings is expected.

How to apply: The start date is tentatively 1st January, 2022, the position is until March 2023 initially. QnP and the University of Southampton value a diverse environment and promote an equal opportunity policy.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion is central to the ethos in Physics and Astronomy. We particularly encourage women, Black, Asian and minority ethnic, LGBT+and disabled applicants to apply for this position.   We are strongly committed to diversity in both the academic and student population, and in recognition we were awarded an Athena SWAN Silver award in 2018 and the Institute of Physics Project Juno Champion status in 2019. Physics and Astronomy gives full consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly, including part-time, and due consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy*, and onsite childcare facilities. For further information please visit https://www.phys.soton.ac.uk/EqualityandDiversity

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

 *subject to qualifying criteria
