About the position

We have a vacancy for a full-time permanent position as researcher in the field of Remote Sensing Systems at NTNU’s Department of Engineering Cybernetics. Engineering cybernetics is about automatic control and monitoring of technical and natural systems. This field is at the front of the technological development, where research on remote sensing systems is rooted in the strategic areas of autonomous systems, small satellites and AI at the Faculty for Information Technologies and Electrical Engineering at NTNU.

The workplace is at NTNU Gløshaugen, Trondheim. The position is associated with the NTNU SmallSat-Lab, the UAV-lab and the Centre for Autonomous Marine Operations and Systems (AMOS).

You will report to the head of department.

Duties of the position

The researcher will participate in various research projects related to remote sensing using aerial vehicles (drones) and small satellites. Particular focus is on hyperspectral imaging for ocean observation where NTNU’s HYPSO-1 and HYPSO-2 satellites and the SeaBee national infrastructure are key assets. Many of the projects will involve close collaboration within the department, students, other parts of NTNU, external research partners, industry and end users.

The position is interdisciplinary and involves collaboration with scientists in physics, chemistry, biology, materials, ocean sciences, electronics, computer science and mathematics.

The main work tasks will be:

  • Research and development related to hyperspectral imaging and data processing, ranging from instrument development/integration, to processing algorithms and software development
  • Applications of hyperspectral imaging to earth and ocean observation, mapping, surveillance and industrial inspection
  • Development and operation of research experimental infrastructure at NTNU such as the SmallSat-lab (HYPSO-1 and HYPSO-2 satellites), UAV-lab and the SeaBee national infrastructure
  • Field experiments involving UAV and small satellite operations, flight testing and ground-truthing
  • Project management, planning, coordination, risk and quality management
  • Develop partnerships and applications for external funding
  • Supervision of master and doctoral students
  • Publication, dissemination and public outreach

The position will also contribute to other tasks related to the department’s ongoing research and education activities. The working area of the position can change in order to serve the department’s needs.

Some travelling must be expected in connection with field operations and testing.

Required selection criteria

The following requirements are necessary for the position:

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant area such as cybernetics, remote sensing, physics or informatics
  • Expertise in remote sensing using hyperspectral imaging for earth and ocean observation
  • Expertise on development and use of data processing algorithms for remote sensing based on hyperspectral imaging
  • Good communication skills in English both orally and in writing well as master Norwegian or be prepared to learn Norwegian

The autonomous vehicle research at NTNU has civilian objectives. However, some of the equipment being used is subject to export regulations or other limitations such as ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations), and the position requires that the applicant has permission to use such equipment. Applicants who are citizens of Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Sweden or NATO countries will satisfy the requirements.

Preferred selection criteria

  • Experience with development or operations of micro- or cube-satellites
  • Experience with field campaigns and integration and use of remote sensing from unmanned aerial vehicles
  • Experience with writing research proposals, and proven ability to attract funding for research
  • Experience with student supervision
  • Interdisciplinary experience and skills
  • Experience with project management, planning, and coordination
  • Interest in innovation and entrepreneurship
  • Valid driver’s license in Norway equivalent to class B

Personal skills will be given large weight. It is important that the person being hired is systematic, can contribute to management and administrative work, has good collaboration skills, an interdisciplinary mindset, and will enjoy working with both employees and students. It is also important that this person is flexible, can work efficiently in multiple projects at the same time, shows willingness to take initiative and responsibility, and contribute with creative solutions in exciting research projects.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of researcher (code 1109) is normally remunerated at gross from NOK 560 000 – 760 000 before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund,

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU

The position is subject to external funding.
