Applications are invited for a Post-doctoral Research Fellow to join the Vision Sciences Research Group in the School of Clinical and Experimental Sciences. This exciting industry-funded post aims to support the following ongoing project in our University laboratories based at University Hospital Southampton (formerly Southampton General Hospital):

Industry-funded proof of concept study to assess the efficacy of a gene therapy product in a laser-induced choroidal neovascularisation (CNV) mouse model.

The post-holder will join an established interdisciplinary team of research staff, students and senior academics in Vision Sciences. The post-holder will have previous experience of working with mouse models under a Home Office Project Licence and of conducting molecular and cell biology techniques on animal tissue. The post-holder’s direct responsibilities will involve conducting experiments involving live mice and ocular cell and tissue isolation - leading to biochemical assays, histology, immunohistochemistry, microscopy and imaging.

Practical laboratory skills and prior experience of working with animal models are essential for this role. A current Home Office Personal Licence (PIL) and experience of obtaining Project Licence amendments would be an advantage. The post-holder will lead in analysing and preparing research result data for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presenting results at appropriate events. They will also have a strong background in the skills involved in the day-to-day running of a laboratory and be familiar with carrying out activities such as ordering, preparing/updating risk assessments and standard operating procedures, and training students and new research staff, as required.

A short video showcasing our important research in Vision Sciences at University of Southampton may be viewed here.  The position is full-time and fixed term until 2nd September 2022 in the first instance, with high potential of extension to 12 months in total. Informal inquiries should be directed to Prof Andrew Lotery (A.J.Lotery@soton.ac.uk).

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
