The purpose of the Collections Design & Delivery team within Education & Learning, is to build rich and diverse collections that enhance the learning and research experiences of individuals from across the King’s community. 

 

Libraries & Collections is part of the wider Students & Education Directorate, a collection of wide-ranging professional services in place to support King’s students and their education. As a directorate we manage the student lifecycle from application to graduation and beyond, to ensure a coherent and seamless student experience and effective administrative processes, working closely with King’s faculties to do so. 

 

About the Role

 

Senior Library Assistants support education and research at King’s by undertaking a range of activities that contribute to the delivery of an innovative and sustainable Libraries & Collections service. They cover a variety of service delivery roles and carry out specialised administrative and processing tasks. Through providing in-depth help, training and guidance they support all users of Libraries & Collections’ services, referring specialist queries onto colleagues as appropriate. By actively engaging with a culture of continuous improvement and change they enable Library Evolution.

 

They are responsible for the supervision of Library Assistants and other colleagues, providing training and support and role-modelling a positive and flexible approach to work. 

 

This is an exciting opportunity for candidates looking to work with library collections to enhance teaching and learning, and who wish to utilise their skills and expertise in communication, problem solving and IT. This is an opportunity to grow your skills in delivering reading lists and acquisition services. 

You will be required to participate in frontline services as required, including contributing towards a rota for evening and weekend working.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.

This is a full-time post, but we welcome applications from candidates seeking a flexible work pattern within our 9am to 7pm operating hours

 

Key responsibilities

Senior Library Assistants (Collections Design & Delivery) actively contribute to Library Evolution and the work of the Education & Learning department by delivering Acquisitions services for the King’s community. They support the Head of Education & Curriculum Liaison by helping to ensure value for money and delivery of the ‘access over ownership’ purchasing principle. As part of the role, they: 

 

  • Administer and deliver services that support the acquisition of materials across multiple areas of the collection and in multiple formats, including: the MyReadingList Service; user-driven acquisition of ebooks; streaming services for film. Build relationships as appropriate with suppliers.  
  • Administer and process digitisation requests and ensure they are copyright compliant in line with our copyright licence; liaise with the Acquisitions Librarian on current Copyright law; monitor and resolve copyright issues in digitised course readings; escalate issues as appropriate. 
  • Deliver workshops and presentations on the MyReadingLists service and system to users of Libraries & Collections’ services and colleagues. 
  • Contribute to the creation and revision of guidance and procedural documentation.  
  • Provide dedicated support and communication to faculties around acquisition services, including the MyReadingList service, resolving in-depth enquiries effectively across a range of channels; support colleagues across Libraries & Collections with acquisitions related enquiries from students. 
  • Support access to, and discovery of, resources by creating catalogue records and by entering and maintaining accurate data, including metadata and orders, on the integrated library management system and related enterprise applications.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

 

 

  Essential criteria

 

•         Suitably qualified by experience in a library setting. 

•         Experience in positively and proactively dealing with routine problems 

•         Experience of training others 

•         Proven IT skills for an office environment 

•         Good numeracy and analytical skills to inform decision-making 

•         Ability to present information to a range of audiences 

•         Excellent oral and written communication skills 

•         Ability to work to high level of accuracy and attention to detail 

•         Ability to work with a broad range of stakeholders in a professional and assured manner 

 
 

Desirable criteria

•         Educated to first degree level 

•         Experience of working in a customer-oriented environment. 

•         Clear understanding of the role of libraries in society and in Higher Education.
