At the University of Southampton, we have an exciting opportunity for a Multi Trade Operative. The post is offered on a full time, permanent basis (36 hours per week) but there is regular overtime available of approximately 6 hours per week.

We occupy a vast estate that is the lifeblood of our activities, and this role will play a vital part in supporting our endeavours by carrying out the delivery of planned and reactive maintenance on both the Internal and External Building infrastructure across the University, to keep our estate running.

This is an exciting time to join the University. We have a global reputation for delivering world-class education, research and enterprise that makes a real impact on society’s biggest challenges and offer a unique working environment where your skills and experience really make a difference.

You will have excellent technical and communication skills, with the ability to plan and manage your own workload. You will be a positive and proactive problem solver and be able to manage a mixture of planned and reactive maintenance at the same time to ensure that work is delivered on time and to a high standard. You will be a strong team player, but also be self-sufficient and able to work independently.

The successful candidate will hold a City and Guilds qualification and/or minimum NVQ 2 qualification in a Building related discipline or equivalent and have successfully completed an apprenticeship or similar training programme.  You will be familiar with H&S legislation and understanding of risk assessments, method statements, and how to apply these to planned and reactive maintenance.

A full driving license is essential to travel to other local sites.

OTE: up to £5,552.82 per annum subject to annual review.

We offer some fantastic benefits including generous annual leave (plus an additional 6 University closure days and bank holidays), company pension scheme, discounted private healthcare and dental, company sick pay, options for flexible working, excellent family leave arrangements, a wide variety of on and off-campus arts and culture facilities and access to a range of staff discounts and offers at local shops, restaurants and service providers.

We will support your long-term future too, with access to the Universities Pension Scheme, and subsidised health and fitness facilities. Furthermore, Southampton, at the centre of the south coast, is a fantastic place in which to live, work and socialise – so regardless of what life stage you are at, you will find a dynamic and vibrant city that caters for all.

We are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect, and equality of opportunity. We select candidates based on merit and ability and aspire to thrive in the diversity of our workforce.  We welcome applications from all candidates with an interest in the role and those who are committed to helping us create an inclusive work environment. We encourage applications from candidates from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities, people who identify as LGBTQ+; and people with disabilities.
