The Helsinki Institute for Social Sciences and Humanities (HSSH) promotes and coordinates research cooperation and infrastructure development in humanities and social sciences (SSH) at the University of Helsinki. To strengthen this unit, we are now looking for a

methodological expert (project planner / laboratory engineer)

for supporting research groups using biosignals, sensor-based and behavioral measures, and audio-visual stimuli. The position is a fixed-term position for four years, starting as soon as possible.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The role of the methodological expert is to work in collaboration with the HSSH Methodological Unit in supporting the City Centre Campus research groups in planning and executing research designs using biosignals, sensor-based and behavioral measures, and audio-visual stimuli as well as in the use and maintenance of relevant measurement equipment and devices. Depending on the competence profile of the methodological expert, the job may also include supporting researchers in designing web-based experiments using, for instance, JavaScript and HTML, and in writing and editing technical reports and research results for publication.

The methodological expert we are looking for has experience in research designs using sensor-based measurement (e.g. physiological sensors, eye-tracking technology, mobile EEG devices) and audio-visual stimuli. The expert also has good and versatile programming skills suited to work with the many device-specific programming languages.

The job requires strong IT competence and some experience in software development, experience in using sensor-based measurement equipment, as well as mastery of at least one relevant programming language (e.g. R, Python, MATLAB). Competence in web-based programming and experience with the platforms for experimental research (e.g. NeuroBS, Presentation, PsychoPy, Psychtoolbox, PsyToolKit) are considered an advantage.

Methodological expert’s tasks include

  • supporting research groups using physiological and sensor-based measurements, experimental behavioral designs, and audio-visual stimuli in planning and executing research
  • maintaining measurement equipment
  • assisting in the development of data collection instruments
  • participate in planning and executing methodological workshops and training
  • support the work of Methodological unit in the domain of experimental research

REQUIREMENTS

We expect applicants to possess an open mind toward the development of interdisciplinary research methods and the willingness to be involved in the creation of a new research culture as well as enhancing research infrastructures relevant to digital data.

We expect the applicants to have

  • A Master's degree (or equivalent competence)
  • willingness to learn and develop along with the changing SSH field methods
  • good collaborative, negotiation and problem-solving skills
  • working in or with a research group
  • fluent English skills

The candidates will also benefit if they have

  • • prior knowledge of multidisciplinary research
  • experience of digital signal processing (such as time-frequency analysis)
  • hands-on experience on electronics
  • experience with the platforms for experimental research (e.g. NeuroBS Presentation, PsychoPy, Psychtoolbox, and PsyToolkit)
  • experience with writing technical sections of research reports

SALARY AND BENEFITS

We offer an exceptionally interesting opportunity to become a member of a new methodological unit and to collaborate with research groups within the HSSH, its national partners and growing international network.

The salary is about 2800–3000 euros per month, depending on the experience and merits of the person selected for the position. There is a 6-month trial period.
