About the opportunity

The purpose of the Bioinformatics Fellow position is to develop and conduct research as part of overall projects on behalf of the group Leader and senior postdoctoral scientists within the group. The Bioinformatic Fellow needs to be technically competent across bioinformatics, statistical genetics, genomics or imaging science as well as skilled in the production of manuscripts, administrative tasks, project management, supervision of students and junior staff, and able to assist and develop grant applications.

The Bioinformatic Fellow is expected to be very well organised and have very good communication skills, as the role requires significant levels of cooperation within the group, with research collaborators and with vendors. High-level problem solving skills and the ability to function productively, efficiently and autonomously from direct supervision are vital to successfully performing the role.

This position is within the Imaging and Phenotyping Laboratory; Sydney School of Health Sciences/ Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney.

About you

We are looking for a Bioinformatics Research Fellow who possesses:

  • a PhD in biostatistics or related discipline similar
  • superior computer programming or software development skills in at least two computational languages with one of them preferably in matlab or python
  • previous practical experience and track record in statistical genetics, genomics or bioinformatics biology, integrating large "omics" data, as well as advanced programming abilities
  • a developing research profile evidenced by original, high-quality and independent published research
  • demonstrated success in designing, implementing and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives
  • a developing network of relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders
  • experience in supervising or mentoring others and/or coordinating team activities
  • a developing knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in the discipline and higher education sector
  • demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively across a range of media and forums.
