Full Time Fixed Term for 18 months
Closing Date:  Monday 29 November 2021
Interview Date:   To be confirmed

Be a part of the University of Southampton, an institution in the top 1% of world universities and one of the UK’s Russell Group research-intensive universities.

The Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) is a world-leading photonics research centre with over 300 staff and students working to create innovative solutions for real-life problems in manufacturing, telecomms, defence, health care, renewable energy, and the environment. Our team of 20 researchers specialises in developing and manufacturing new photonic components for applications in quantum technology, integrated optical sensors, and laser optics. Working closely with our spin-out company, Covesion Ltd (www.covesion.com), we pride ourselves on taking basic research to prototype and product, providing our staff with a solid foundation for a career in photonics.

You will develop components for nonlinear optical conversion towards the deliverables of the Innovate UK collaborative research projects Blue Laser Integration with Networked Quantum-Memories (BLINQ)  and (Quantum Technologies) QT Assemble under the supervision of the award holders. The role will focus on developing Periodically Poled Lithium Neobate (PPLN) waveguides for the generation of atom- and ion-trap specific wavelengths and cover waveguide design, optical characterisation and integration with wider system-level components such as pump lasers and single-photon detectors. As part of the Innovate UK Quantum Technology programme, this work features close end-user engagement with industry.

Applications are encouraged from those with a strong background in physical sciences – optics, lasers and photonics. You will have good fabrication skills and the ability to conduct research both independently and as part of a team. Experience in nonlinear optics is highly desirable.

A PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in optics and laser physics is essential.

This appointment is for an 18-month period, ideally starting in January 2022.

Informal enquiries are welcome and should be directed to Prof Corin Gawith corin.gawith@soton.ac.uk

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Application Procedure:

You should submit your completed online application form at https://jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above. If you need any assistance, please call Hannah Farrance (Recruitment Team) on +44 (0) 23 8059 2507. Please quote reference 1565321PN on all correspondence.
