Are you an experienced and ambitious Research Fellow looking to further your career in one of the UK’s leading Innovation Knowledge Centres? Do you have a background in developing and delivering high quality, high impact research that can help us deliver the National Biofilms Innovation Centre’s (NBIC; www.biofilms.ac.uk) highly ambitious Strategic Plan (2020–2022) to grow research funding by £40M by 2022? 

We are looking for a proactive researcher to support NBIC’s aim to create world-class interdisciplinary research and industry partnerships to deliver breakthrough science and technologies to control and exploit biofilms. You will carry out an experimental research programme aligned to the research themes and objectives of NBIC to prevent, detect, manage or engineer biofilms. We anticipate that you will have a PhD or equivalent research experience within industry/academia in a relevant scientific and/or technical subject area.

You will be supporting activities for NBIC led by teams at the core partner universities of Liverpool, Southampton, Edinburgh and Nottingham with a partnership with 59 universities and research centres across the UK as well as major global centres –  The Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering, the Centre for Biofilm Engineering at Montana State University and an increasing number of international research centres.

This role will be located at the University of Southampton Highfield Campus.

What will you bring to the role? 

To be appointed you will have: 

  • Significant experience working within containment Level 2 microbiology laboratories;
  • Extensive experience working with bacteriophages;
  • Excellent knowledge of the mechanisms of phage resistance in bacteria;
  • Significant experience in protein expression and purification;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Experience at presenting research results at group meetings and conferences.

This full-time, fixed-term post is available until 30 November 2022.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
