Core responsibilities:

* Recognised internally as a professional mechanical design engineer, through the delivery of appropriate designs and solutions.

* Develop and implement new designs and design modifications across multiple complex projects, including detailed analysis and reporting for the projects they are assigned to.

* Provide specialist expertise and support to the project team through design, analysis, data interpretation and solution implementation.

* Contribute to the development of operational activities to ensure excellence in the stakeholder experience.

* Work with internal and external partners, collaborators and customers whilst influencing future opportunities and University reputation.

* Participate in meetings with customers, partners & other stakeholders, to support project progress and the management of client expectations.

* Responsible for managing budgets for consumables and some capital items, keeping suitable records and utilising University administrative tools.

* Identify, recommend and embody components and modules through supplier engagement, managing their service provision and quality of delivery.

* Contribute to successful instrument opto-mechanical assembly, integration and test.

* Ensure applicable standards and regulations are met through the design, manufacture and test of equipment and instrumentation.

* Maintain a high quality of written documentation, technical files and reporting.

Role responsibilities:

* Provide day-to-day management and execution of design and engineering tasks and/or experimental activity to ensure the delivery of high quality technical outputs.

* Ensure technical activity remains aligned with and focused on customer requirements and associated in-depth specifications.

* Contribute to and ensure assembly, integration & test activities are managed in line with customer requirements, with a professional approach to documentation and reporting.

* Leverage knowledge from other disciplines (e.g. electrical & control systems) to support the design, development and integration of complex optical, mechanical, electrical and control sub-systems.

* Take responsibility for analysing and reporting of results.

* Collaborate with internal and external academics, industry and technical specialists to support the delivery of projects.

* Take responsibility for the design, set-up, maintenance and integrity of facilities and equipment required for the successful progression and delivery of projects.

* Liaise with internal and external agencies, local authorities, industries and visitors where appropriate.

* Provide specialist technical problem-solving advice to inform project activity and planning, as well as continuous improvement and service development.

* Manage procurement activities and test/compliance programmes whilst leading the technical liaison with contractors.

* Provide guidance and advice to support University health and safety and compliance issues within projects.

* Contribute to the delivery of research outputs and support the preparation of innovative proposals for research or industrial projects. Look at 24B

* Contribute to promotional events and presentations at conferences.

* Take responsibility for monitoring and updating risk assessments and safety procedures, providing guidance to others where necessary.
