The University of Sydney is in a period of exciting change and tremendous development, striving to deliver on the commitment within our workforce planning objectives and the One Sydney, Many People 2021 - 2024 Strategy. In light of these developments, our Organisational Development (OD) team is seeking an experienced and consultative Manager Indigenous Employment to play a key role in furthering the cultural competence of the University. In this role, you will be partnering with the broader HR team, Indigenous Strategy and Services (ISS) and the University's National Centre for Cultural Competence towards delivering on various strategic initiatives around staff engagement and development, training programs and other support mechanisms for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees.

In close collaboration with the Senior Manager, Diversity and Inclusion, you will further establish strong working partnerships between HR Partnering (in particular through the HR Partner (Identified) position), ISS, OD and Recruitment together with external providers in order to deliver a seamless employment journey for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff at the University.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • drive the further development and implementation of diversity training across the University
  • collaborate with relevant teams to design and implement localised action plans for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment within Faculties, Schools and Professional Service Units
  • steer the development and establishment of key diversity staff networks to influence the University's diversity and inclusion agenda
  • partner with wider HR teams to develop strategies aimed at facilitating greater Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander recruitment and targeted retention measures
  • focus on building diverse leadership, education and research cohorts of Indigenous and culturally diverse staff for appointment to senior roles
  • work with HR Data Analytics teams on data related to career patterns to identify and address enablers and barriers to accelerate career progression and leadership development for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff.

About you

  • working experience as a Manager Indigenous Employment (or similar) within a large and multifaceted organisation
  • deep knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander societies and culture
  • up-to-date knowledge of the current political, economic and social issues and future challenges facing the management of Indigenous employment in the Australian context
  • awareness of emerging and effective organisational development and HR approaches that underpin advisory services and quality practice; including knowledge of best practice recruitment, retention, development and attraction of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • enhanced stakeholder management skills with the ability to build trusted relationships and inter-disciplinary ways of working
  • capability in operating with tact and professionalism at a senior level as well as proven influencing skills to support the delivery of strategic diversity goals, initiatives and programs
  • leadership capability to constructively engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholder groups in developing strategic implementation plans and outcomes which produce measurable results.
