Applications are invited for the post of Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Politics & International Relations. The post is full-time and fixed-term for 18 months, starting on 10 January 2022.
The Department of Politics & International Relations seeks to appoint a full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on an exciting new project studying the activities of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This ESRC-funded research project, entitled “The Global Governance of Ideas: International Organisations as Agents of Policy Diffusion”, sets out to understand how IMF technical assistance advice influences domestic policy in East Africa. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr Thomas Stubbs and will join a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment, where there is opportunity to collaborate with scholars in the fields of international political economy, public policy, international relations, economics, and development studies.
You will be a qualitative social scientist with a keen interest to investigate the determinants, relational dynamics, and consequences of IMF technical assistance around the world, and a willingness to conduct fieldwork in East Africa.
You must have or be close to completing a PhD in a relevant social science, and have evidence of original research work through scientific papers of refereed journal quality. In addition, you must have qualitative empirical research skills. Some experience in conducting semi-structured interviews will also be advantageous to the role.
You will demonstrate an existing personal research agenda in international political economy, international public policy, development studies, or adjacent fields, and a commitment to the development of sub-projects within the overall objectives of this research project. You will have the ability to be the lead author or co-author of papers of peer-reviewed journal article quality, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. You will be given the opportunity to develop a wider research agenda of your own.
