The School of Natural and Built Environment (NBE) at Queen’s University, Belfast is currently seeking a Research Fellow to undertake research in historic maps with a focus on map lineages.

The post arises from a Leverhulme Trust award where the project team have already undertaken digitisation of historic maps of Britain and analysis of spatial distortions in the positioning of places – where maps have similar distortion patterns this may suggest a common source.

As a research fellow you will support this ongoing project, in exploring lineages in maps of Britain, from the eleventh to the seventeenth centuries. A key focus will be on assessing how far manuscript and printed maps borrow from previous maps or provide evidence of cartographic innovation.

You will also play a key role in assisting with the development of online tools for accessing the digitised historic maps, contributing to publications deriving from the research, and liaising with the project team and research libraries which are home to the maps.

This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of an inter-disciplinary team that is undertaking novel and cutting edge research in historical cartography.

This post is available on a fixed term contract for 7 months.

The successful candidate must have and your CV/Cover letter  should clearly demonstrate you have:

Normally have or be about to obtain a PhD in Historical Geography, Geographic Information Science, Cartographic History or the broader Social Sciences (with a quantitative focus). A minimum of three years recent relevant research experience with: Using to a high degree of competency GIS software Proven experience of post-processing of large spatial data sets. Independent research and time management. A good publication record commensurate with stage of career. *Please note the above are not an exhaustive list.*

Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
