About the position

We have a vacancy for a postdoc in physical chemistry at the Department of chemistry and within the Centre of Excellence, Porelab (Porous Media Laboratory). The appointment has a duration of 2 years.

The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions.

PoreLab is a Norwegian Center of Excellence created in 2017 and situated at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, and the University of Oslo (UiO)
The Center, which is supported by the Research Council of Norway, is an interdisciplinary Center with joint efforts in theory, computer simulations and experiments, in fundamental and applied directions. The center works to advance the understanding of flow in porous media. The main goal of the center is to develop theories, principles, tools and methods to reduce the trial and error approach to porous media with relevance in biology, chemistry, geology and geophysics based on fluid mechanics, non-equilibrium thermodynamics and statistical mechanics.

Further information about PoreLab can be found here: https://porelab.no/

Information about the department of Chemistry at NTNU can be obtained here: https://www.ntnu.edu/chemistry

Duties of the position

An open postdoc position is available for the development of non-equilbrium thermodynamics transport theories for two-phase flow in porous media. The project is related to transport in porous media through thin films and heterogeneous structures in the presence of a strong thermal gradient. Disjoining pressure, thermal diffusion and surface effects provide various routes for transport in the porous medium, which will be analyzed and understood in detail by combining molecular simulations and density functional theory for fluids.

Required selection criteria

  • You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD
  •  You must be able to document extensive experience with and knowledge about thermodynamics. Prioritized candidates will be those who are able to document relevant project work and research within the study of thermodynamics and transport properties.
  • The candidate must have been responsible for distributing a major open-source project within thermodynamics, since this will be an important outcome of the project.
  • Documented experience with development of thermodynamic perturbation theories for fluids is a requirement.
  •  The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test (Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)).

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant

Preferred selection criteria

  • Prior experience with solving differential equations that result in shocks, documented through papers in international journals is an advantage.

Personal characteristics

We are looking for a positive and creative personality who can work independently and consistently on the research project. The candidate should be able to take initiative, work goal-oriented, tackle challenges, enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams.
