John Hansard Gallery – part of the University of Southampton – is a leading contemporary art gallery which plays a dynamic role in the cultural life of Southampton and the region. Established in 1979, JHG is one of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisations. The Gallery relocated from the University’s Highfield Campus to our new purpose-built home in the city centre as part of Studio 144 in Southampton’s Cultural Quarter. This move tripled exhibition spaces and increased capacity for active learning opportunities as well as enabling greater impact in terms of artists’ production and reaching new audiences locally, nationally and internationally. 

We are looking to appoint Part - Time (Permanent, 0.3 FTE) Gallery Assistant to join our Front of House team two days a week. 

These two days will be on an two week pattern of :

  • Thursday and Friday 
  • Friday and Saturday

Management are open to discussion about this pattern but an alternate Saturday is required for the role. The successful applicant to this post will make an essential contribution to the successful realisation of our acclaimed programme of contemporary art exhibitions, events, education and outreach activity. 

Gallery Assistants deliver the highest standard of customer care, providing a friendly and professional welcome to John Hansard Gallery. Using their art knowledge, they will add depth to the experience of visitors of all ages and backgrounds. Acting as a key visitor-facing members of the John Hansard Gallery team the Gallery Assistants will support the Duty Manager in the day-to-day management and security of the building, ensuring visitor safety by complying with Health & Safety and emergency evacuation procedures. They will also undertake administrative and money-handling duties for the Gallery’s retail offer, help in gathering audience feedback and visitor statistics, support access initiatives, and provide occasional set up and invigilation for out of hours events.
