University Librarian, UCD Library, Permanent

Job Details

Applications are invited for a Permanent post of a University Librarian within UCD Library.

UCD Library is at the heart of a university that is growing both in terms of its impact and the student and faculty cohort it supports. The Library needs to actively engage with this growth, not only rethinking and scaling the resources it provides in response, but to become a driver for this growth, contributing to increasing the impact and quality of research and demonstrating the excellence required to attract new students and faculty in a competitive global marketplace.

The University is now seeking a Librarian who will provide dynamic and visionary leadership for UCD Library as it develops its strategic position in a student-focused and research-intensive university, and who will embrace the opportunities of new technologies while retaining the traditional values of academic librarianship.

The mission of UCD Library is to organise access to and use of the University's information resources to inspire engagement and learning, to enable their use in promoting research and innovation, and to contribute to the preservation of Irish cultural heritage. To be a leader in enriching the student experience, to empower global engagement, and to act as an intellectual centre for the community.

UCD Library consists of 5 libraries, UCD Archives, UCD Library Special Collections, and the National Folklore Collection UCD and a wide range of digital resources. UCD Archives, UCD Library Special Collections and the National Folklore Collection house collections of national importance for use by the UCD community and external researchers.

UCD Library is an inclusive space, acts as a learning commons, and is a community resource and hub. UCD Library has over 1.7m visits per annum and provides an extensive portfolio of services and collections for over 30,000 students and over 3000 staff. Reporting to the Registrar and Deputy President or nominee, the University Librarian will lead and develop a strong dynamic senior leadership and over 100 experienced and talented staff. The University Librarian will create, shape and communicate a compelling vision for the future of the Library and all its stakeholders, working closely with University Management Team, College Principals, Deans, the Chief Information Officer, and UCD Estates.

The University Librarian will consult widely with the University community and will develop strategy to advance that vision in alignment with the University's strategic plan. The University Librarian will oversee the strategic development and management of the Library's collections, balancing print and digital resources, open and closed access, capacity and storage for a multi-disciplinary and multi-site service. In the context of the University strategy `Rising to the Future 2020-2024', a key priority of the role will be the evaluation, review and design of a preferred structure for UCD Library senior management that robustly meets the challenges of an accelerated digital shift, succession planning, staff development and the establishment of the next generation leadership team.
