Job description

The Department of Women and Children’s Health at King’s College London is seeking to appoint a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Obstetrics. The Department, one of 5 in the School of Life Course Sciences ( KCL Faculty of Life Science and Medicine) has 32 clinical and non-clinical established academic posts, and associated research groups.  An internationally recognised translational research programme in Obstetrics and Maternal Medicine includes investigation into hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, metabolic disorders of pregnancy and premature birth. Our discovery science programme is supported by the Women and Children’s theme and core facilities of the Guy’s and Thomas’s NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, and our translational programme through King’s Health Partners’ Institute of Women and Children’s Health The post holder will have a competitive track record in obstetrics research, be expected to attract external research income and to lead an active research group. A contribution to KCL medical undergraduate and postgraduate education is required, including responsibility for the NIHR Integrated Academic Trainee (IAT) programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The postholder will work as an NHS Consultant in Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT), for 5 programmed activities.


Proposed Academic job: Clinical Component


The clinical component of this job is proposed to contain:


-  1:4 weekday and weeknight labour ward on call

-  Antenatal clinic (alternate weeks)

-  Hypertension/Diabetes in pregnancy clinic (weekly)

-  Elective section/Maternity Assessment Unit cover (1 session per week)

-  Antenatal ward round (weekly)


This post will be offered on an a fixed-term contract for 3 years


This is a full-time  post - 100% full time equivalent


Key responsibilities

  • Research group leader in pregnancy
  • NIHR IAT lead for Women’s Health
  • Participate in undergraduate (MBBS; iBSc) or postgraduate (MSc and clinical training) teaching/ training

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria 

  1. Clinically medically qualified
  2. CCT in obstetrics and gynecology
  3. PhD (or equivalent)
  4. MRCOG
  5. Postdoctoral research in pregnancy
  6. Potential to develop own research group 

Desirable criteria 

  1. Research in pregnancy hypertension (or related areas)
  2. Previous grant funding as lead investigator
  3. Teaching qualification (or equivalent)
