SENIOR LECTURER IN ARCHAEOLOGY

In pursuit of the ideals of excellence and diversity, the University of Pretoria wishes to invite applications for the following vacancy.

The Department of Anthropology and Archaeology seeks a senior lecturer with specialization in late Holocene/Later Stone Age and Iron Age studies in southern Africa, extensive field experience in conducting archaeological surveys and excavations, and a proven track record of published research.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses both face-to-face and in online- and  
  • hybrid-model modes;
  • Supervise and recruit postgraduate students at Honours, Masters and/Doctorate levels;
  • Develop curricula and co-ordinate undergraduate and postgraduate programmes;
  • Conduct  academic administration and other duties as determined by the Head of Department;
  • Initiate and conduct research into the late Holocene of southern Africa, particularly the Later Stone Age and the Iron Age;
  • Publish research in accredited, peer-reviewed journals;
  • Organise postgraduate student writing workshops and annual field schools;
  • Mobilise resources for postgraduate students/research projects; 
  • Participate in the Department’s strategic initiatives relating to teaching, research, and community engagement.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Doctorate in Archaeology or closely-related discipline;
  • Postdoctoral experience;
  • Proven research and publication record in late Holocene/Later Stone Age and Iron Age archaeology in southern Africa;
  • Demonstrated field experience in archaeological surveys and excavations; 
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level, appropriate to the post level;
  • Proven postgraduate supervisory skills at the appropriate level.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Appropriate language and communication skills;
  • Good interpersonal and mentoring skills;
  • Ability to interpret material culture relating to southern African Later Stone Age, rock art, and the Iron Age;
  • Proven record in student skills transfer and development.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • NRF rating;
  • Track record of hosting postdoctoral candidates.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
