About the role

The German Studies discipline within the School of Languages and Linguistics teaches a broad suite of undergraduate and graduate courses, maintains a vigorous research higher degree culture, and has an internationally recognised research profile. It contributes to interdisciplinary teaching within the School, the Faculty of Arts and the wider University. It provides flexible offerings in particular to beginners’ level teaching through the teaching of in semester subjects as well as intensive teaching in the winter and summer periods.

The School now seeks to appoint a continuing Senior Tutor (Teaching Specialist) to consolidate and further develop the German Studies program.

The Senior Tutor will contribute to teaching excellence within the discipline including the coordination of subjects, preparation and conduct of tutorials and related assessment, and consultations with students.

As a key member of a small team, the applicant will be expected to collaborate extensively with other German Studies and School colleagues. They will have an appreciation of the discipline’s subject matter and will be a committed and engaging educator who will be able to develop, teach and coordinate German subjects on all proficiency levels.

The successful candidate will also actively contribute to overall teaching excellence within the German Program including ongoing curriculum review, to the various avenues of student engagement such as the German peer-mentoring program and the German theatre project and will foster engagement links with external networks/partners.

The appointee will also perform administrative duties associated with the appointment, and as directed.

The Senior Tutor will receive ongoing mentoring in all aspects of an academic career.

About you

As a Senior Tutor in German Studies, you will need an undergraduate degree and a Graduate Diploma of Education (German) or equivalent; additional qualification pertaining the teaching in a tertiary education environment. You will need to have native or near-native competence in German and in English. You will also be required to demonstrate experience in coordinating and teaching German ab initio (beginners’ level) subjects at a tertiary education level in a range of formats (on-campus, hybrid and online deliveries, intensives and in-semester teaching), alongside having the ability to teach German language and culture subjects at all levels from A1 to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) (on-campus, hybrid and online delivery.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the capacity for excellence in teaching including the capacity to initiate curriculum development and course design, such as online delivery or coordination and teaching of large subjects and should also have a proven record mentoring and supporting students. Also, the candidate will be required to showcase excellent interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to effectively work as a part of and/ or lead a small team and liaise with a wide range of people including staff, students, corporate and community groups. Lastly, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate professional and collegial behavior of a very high standard (encompassing commitment to the Faculty's Values and Behaviors).
