Research Fellow – meeting the net zero challenge in the UK and the role of BECCS
We seek to appoint a post-doctoral scientist to join the IDRIC consortium- the UK Industrial Decarbonization Research and Innovation Centre www.idric.org , based at the University of Southampton, on a project entitled ‘Identifying optimal sites for BECCS – energy, GHG mitigation and environmental enhancement’. The successful candidate will extend our ongoing work on optimization modelling to elucidate the best sites for BECCS deployment in the UK with respect to decarbonization alongside the delivery of optimized ecosystem services and non-economic co-benefits from this technology. The project will involve engagement with industrial stakeholders committed to net zero in the UK and linked to the main IDRIC hub. This will be followed by modelling that uses our current model as described in a recent paper – Donnison et al (2020 https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/gcbb.12695 ), with further improvements and refinements to value the ecosystem services associated with BECCS feedstock supply.
You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Computational sciences/biology or similar.
Start date: As soon as possible, with interviews planned to take place on site in Southampton, UK. Candidates should be self motivated and have their thesis submitted or awarded, with a strong background in modelling, writing code, preferably with experience of using Matlab or similar and GIS software and with an understanding of the ecosystem services concept and scientific literature. For further details and an informal discussion please contact Lindsay- Marie Armstrong (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Gail Taylor (email@example.com).
*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
You should submit your completed online application form at https://jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above.
