Job description

The School of EEECS at Queen’s University Belfast is seeking an exceptional candidate to the post of Research Fellow in the area of autonomous collision avoidance strategies for maritime vehicles.

You will be based at our multidisciplinary centre for Intelligent Autonomous Manufacturing Systems (i-AMS). You will be an active member of a wider community, contributing to world-leading research outputs and new research initiatives in the broader area of autonomous planning, decision theory, maritime navigation, and cyber-physical systems.

This role also offers substantial career opportunities, including training in innovation, commercialization and soft skills, travelling to research conferences and visits within the group’s research network.

This is an excellent time to join us as we continue to develop innovative technologies and solutions in partnership with the Northern Ireland Technology Centre.

The successful candidate must have, and you should clearly demonstrate this in your CV/Cover letter:

  • A minimum of 2:1 Honours degree in Engineering/Computer Science/Mechatronics/Applied Mathematics, or related discipline.
  • Have or be about to obtain a relevant PhD. (PhD thesis must be submitted, candidates are required to demonstrate this on their application)
  • At least 3 years relevant research experience to include:
    • Track record of undertaking research in the area of autonomous systems (relevant to the project)
    • Proven track record of using theoretical and experimental models (relevant to systems and control theory) to  carry out analyses, critical evaluations, and interpretations of experimental data relevant to the research project i.e.  proven expertise of work in modern control theory, for example: set-based methods, hybrid systems, formal verification in control
    • Proven experience of working in programming languages such as Matlab/Simulink, Python, and Julia etc.
    • Working effectively as part of a research team in the development and promotion of the research theme
    • Strong publication record commensurate with stage of career.

Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
