KŌHATU CENTRE for HAUORA MĀORI

Kōhatu Centre for Hauora Māori is a growing Centre, positioned within the Division of Health Science that seeks to make a difference for Māori Health and equity. Kōhatu's functions includes Māori Health teaching, research, service and Māori student achievement in health. Kōhatu is growing across its functions and activities and is seeking to enhance the range and impact internally and external to the University. Kōhatu is also home to the Māori Health Workforce Development Unit and other strategic, teaching and research functions. Kōhatu currently has over 20 staff with this number growing.

The role/Te mahi

The successful applicant will have a passion and commitment to Hauora Māori by undertaking innovative Hauora Māori research, engaging in transformational teaching and contributing to service within Kōhatu. The position will be particularly involved in teaching into the undergraduate medical curriculum, however it will also have opportunities to teach into other undergraduate health professional curricula as well as teaching in the Bachelor of Health Science (undergraduate and postgraduate) Māori health papers. This position will also involve developing and delivering research in Māori health and equity, and other areas. Kōhatu has a diverse range of research and research collaborations, and this position will have many opportunities to not only develop their own research but also engage with and partner with other research.

Kōhatu enjoys a positive relationship with Māori students, whānau, organisations, iwi and hapū, alongside wide internal and external networks. This position will engage with our many networks and relationships to support Kōhatu outcomes.

This position will work as a part of a Hauora Māori academic team that includes; the Director of Kōhatu / Professor for Māori Health, a Professor of Public Health, a Senior Lecturer and Lecturer in Hauora Māori and a number of Professional Practice Fellows, Teaching Fellows and administrative staff and post-graduate students.

Skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

We are looking for candidates with the following attributes:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification and postgraduate qualification in Hauora Māori.
  • A background in health practice would be particularly welcomed.
  • Proficiency in te reo Māori me ōna tikanga.
  • An interest in Māori health advancement.
  • A capacity to work within the context of Māori values including manaakitanga, whakawhanaungatanga and mana tangata.
  • Sound academic skills including academic writing and referencing.
  • Experience with Māori tauira and a capacity to engage with students and staff.
  • Excellent people skills.

We are also looking for commitment to Māori Development and the University's Māori Strategic Framework, as well as genuine interest in Hauora Māori teaching and research.
