LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be required to perform at a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer level regarding academic activities in the Department of Medical Oncology, namely:

  • Teaching:       
    • Lecturing to the undergraduate medical students of the University;
    • Lecturing to the honours and Masters students enrolled in the Department;
    • Preparing and marking of examinations (where required);
    • Preparing and marking of journal club contributions by honours and Masters students in the Department;
    • Lecturing to all members of the Department as and when required (including nursing staff and allied workers);
    • Assisting in presenting a TNM course annually to students enrolled in honours or Masters postgraduate courses in the Department.
  • Research:      
    • Conducting departmental in-house research which will add to the volume of knowledge of oncology in South African patients;
    • Assisting in an advisory capacity with any in-house research which is done by other members of the Department;
    • Assisting any members of staff from other departments who wish to utilize information from the Department;
    • Managing, co-ordinating and carrying out duties relating to all Pharmaceutical Clinical Trial activities according to accepted GCP standards.  This includes (but is not limited to):
      • Regulatory requirements according to SAHPRA and Ethics Committee requirements;
      • Pharmaceutical requirements according to study guidelines;
      • Clinical research requirements relating to data collection, assimilation, and storage of all information. 
  • Supervisory:
    • Supervising all honours students enrolled in the Departmental postgraduate courses. This will include (but not be limited to) assisting with protocol development, data interpretation and dissertation preparation);
    • Co-supervising all Masters students enrolled in the Departmental postgraduate courses. This will include (but not be limited to) assisting with protocol development, data interpretation and dissertation preparation).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Lecturer:

  • A registered Pharmacist with a Pharmaceutical Master’s degree; 
  • Research experience in medical oncology with at least two or more accredited publications in ISI journals; 
  • One years’ teaching experience in pharmaceutics, oncology or related research; 
  • Current registration with the Pharmacy Council.

Senior Lecturer:

  • A registered Pharmacist with a Pharmaceutical doctoral degree; 
  • Research experience in medical oncology with at least five accredited publications in ISI journals;
  • Three years’ teaching experience in pharmaceutics, oncology or related research
  • Conference papers delivered;
  • At least two postgraduate students supervised to completion, preferably at Masters level or higher;
  • Current registration with the Pharmacy Council.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Working knowledge of the legal and ethical requirements for postgraduate students;
  • Working knowledge of clinical study requirements;
  • Organisational skills;
  • Knowledge of a variety of common computer programmes;
  • The ability to work in a team.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Previous teaching experience;
  • Good Clinical Practice certification;
  • Previous experience with aseptic pharmaceutical mixing techniques.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
