The shipping sector needs to move fast to develop future proof zero carbon ship propulsion systems. These posts will be part of a team in the Southampton’s Marine and Maritime institute actively engaged in seeking out innovative solutions to help develop the future technology necessary to achieve this.

We are looking for a diverse team of individuals with a range of technical skills and research experience specifically as they relate to:

  • Propulsion system design for small through to large scale vessels
  • Energy supply/demand modelling for fuel cell based systems both PEM and Solid Oxide with hybrid battery complements
  • Understanding the influence of vibration and motions on the performance of fuel cell systems at sea
  • Use of model scale captured and free running models to assess powering effects on performance due to seakeeping
  • Acquisition and analysis of full-scale data from ship board trials and from a land based fuel cell demonstration facility

You will have :

  • A PhD or equivalent similar experience in maritime engineering/naval architecture/energy technologies or a related discipline.
  • Expertise in critical literature review and uses of databases to access open source research.
  • Proven ability to carry out high level systems analysis and modelling.
  • Be a confident communicator who can deliver technical reports, and liaise effectively with industry and academic partners.

The findings and methods developed are expected to be of sufficient scientific novelty and application that they will lead to publications in leading engineering journals. You will disseminate the research findings at project meetings, international conferences, and industrial events. In addition, you will be responsible for supporting general research activity at the University of Southampton and encouraging PhD, MSc and Undergraduate students in related research activity.

You will demonstrate a strong commitment to independent research, with a publication track record to match, and the ability to work with other academics, local and central Government and industry. It is essential you have proven organisational and time management skills, with demonstrable attention detail and able to manage conflicting priorities.

You should submit your completed online application form at https://jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above. If you need any assistance, please call Kate Pounds (Recruitment Team) on +44 (0) 23 8059 2750, or email recruitment@soton.ac.uk. Please quote reference 1521721DA on all correspondence.

Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
