Assistant Professor: 29,046-31,993RMB/month (with the opportunity to go to 35,588RMB/month based on future annual performance and evaluations after being in post)

Associate Professor: 36,127–38,967 RMB/month (with the opportunity to go to 42,705 RMB/month based on future annual performance and evaluations after being in post)

Department Overview

The Department of Applied Linguistics is a research-intensive environment with two MA programmes: the MA in TESOL and MA in Applied Linguistics (with a Specialisation in Multilingualism), and also contributes a Linguistics pathway on four UG programmes. We are also currently developing a Applied Linguistics Research Laboratory, for Psycholinguistic and Phonetic research.

The Department of Applied Linguistics seeks a dynamic and enthusiastic Assistant/Associate Professor with excellent research, teaching, and supervision qualifications who will contribute to the department’s research profile in one of the following areas: Corpus Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Discourse Analysis, and/or Cognitive Linguistics. Responsibilities and Duties

The appointee will be expected to contribute to the department’s research profile and should have an excellent track record of publication in their research area, appropriate to their stage of career. An ability and willingness to contribute to or lead collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects would be a strong advantage.

In terms of teaching, the successful candidate must be able to contribute widely to the Undergraduate Programme, including in least three of the following: Introduction to Linguistics: Grammar, Introduction to Linguistics: Discourse, English as a Global Language, History of English, Sounds of English, Language and Society, Semantics and Pragmatics, and Language and Gender. A contribution to academic administration will also be expected. 

Qualifications/Experiences

  • A Ph.D. degree or equivalent in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, or a related discipline is essential.
  • A strong track record or high potential of research, appropriate to stage of career is essential.
  • Experience of teaching in a Higher Education environment is essential
  • Experience of teaching and supervision at the Postgraduate level is highly desirable
  • Experience of Technology Enhanced Learning is desirable.
  • Evidenced teaching excellence is desirable

Compensation Package

Members of Academic Staff are entitled to subsidies for accommodation, travel, and children’s educational, medical insurance, and a one-time relocation allowance is provided. Overseas staff may receive a tax “holiday,” depending on nationality and personal circumstances.

Citizenship and Visa Regulations

Employment at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is regulated by Chinese Labour Laws, and must comply with the regulations of the provincial government. These regulations stipulate who is eligible for legal employment with regard to obtaining work permits and visas.  Please be advised candidates over 65 may be not eligible for PRC work visa.
