The University of Southampton’s Estate accommodates around 27,000 staff and students over 8 residential and non-residential campuses and includes approximately 150 large buildings.  Energy and water consumption, and hence carbon footprint is inevitably very large, and it is essential that this is well managed and optimum efficiency ensured. Consumption must be accurately measured and reported, and this is the responsibility of the Energy Management Team.

The University has in place a Sustainability Strategy with 6 goals. Two of which are to “Achieve net zero emissions for Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2030” and “Measure our total emissions footprint and set targets for Scope 3 emissions reductions”. The Energy Management Team are responsible for supporting the University in the delivery of these. Areas of work include investigating energy and water reduction opportunities, promotion of behaviour change and monitoring performance of the estate’s buildings and their mechanical and electrical services.

Another important role of the team is in preparing and submitting energy and water data to comply with various legislative and non-legislative reporting obligations.

The main tool at the disposal of the Energy Management team in carrying out their work is a comprehensive Automatic Metering System (AMS). The AMS currently automatically downloads data from over 900 meters, mainly electricity but also heat, gas and water, including those related to the University’s award winning major Combined Heat and Power Plant.

The University is looking for an Assistant Energy Analyst to join the Energy Management Team. The successful candidate will assist the Energy Manager with the maintenance, operation and expansion of the AMS and in the delivery of the various other roles of the team described above.

To meet the requirements of this post, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate good diplomatic communication skills, an inquisitive and analytical mind, a sound understanding of modern database systems and statistical analysis and, ideally, will have an understanding of building services engineering principles. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will be educated to HNC/HND or Degree level in an appropriate discipline.
